Extractions: The "Ministry of Examinations" of Taiwan decided on March 3 to delete all subjects concerning "national history and geography" from 12 kinds of exams including public servant enrollment and international news staff qualification. The move, which intends to exclude knowledge of both mainland and Taiwan history, geography from the island's tests, has aroused strong indignation from relevant parsonages on the island. Deleted subjects reportedly include "national history", "brief introduction to national history and geography" and the like. As a result, basic knowledge as "By expelling invaders from which country did Zheng Chenggong recover Taiwan at the end of Ming Dynasty?" and "What is the unique culture of native inhabitants in Taiwan?" will fade away in the minds of today's Taiwan people. The decision will reportedly be fully implemented as of January 16, 2006, which will affect 16 kinds of exams including public servant enrollment, college entrance, international news staff and "diplomatic staff" qualification.

Extractions: In the early 1970s, electronics was targeted by the government and people of Taiwan as a strategic technology and was heavily promoted through various policies. Since then, Taiwan's electronics industry has achieved outstanding success. At present, the electronics industry, especially the semiconductor and the information products sectors, is characterized by rapid growth and continued high potential. This book investigates the past performance, current status, and future development of Taiwan's electronics industry. The information is based on the authors first-hand assessment of over 100 electronics companies in Taiwan, academic studies of Taiwan's electronics, computers, and semiconductor industries, and Chinese language sources including information obtained from Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs, Institute of Industrial Technology Research, and Institute for the Information Industry. This book consists of nine chapters and begins with a brief overview of Taiwan's geography, demographics and languages, government structure, educational policy, and labor force. (Chapter 1). Chapter 2 discusses Taiwans present economic condition, public finance and industry status, the national goal of becoming the Asia-Pacific Regional Operations Center, as well as the general history of economic development and philosophy of economic policy. Government policies to promote the development of science and technology are addressed in Chapter 3, which includes an examination of the dynamic interrelationships among Taiwan's central government, research institutes, universities, and private industries, as well as the role of the science park in national technology development. The recent progress in building the National Information Infrastructure is also discussed in this chapter.

It became a protectorate of the Chinese Empire in 1206, the year the great Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan founded the Yuan dynasty. The island was made a prefecture (county) of the coastal mainland province of Fukien in 1684, and in 1885, during the Ching or Manchu dynasty (China's last reigning house), Taiwan was proclaimed a separate province of China. For centuries Taiwan has been familiar to the West as Formosa, a name derived from the 16th century Portuguese mariners who, on sighting the island from a galleon, named it "IIha Formosa!" (Beautiful Island!). The official Chinese name for the Pescadores (Fishermen's Isles), a name also given by Portuguese mariners, is Penghu. The archipelago is located in the Taiwan Strait, and forms one of the 16 counties of Taiwan province. The Dutch invaded Taiwan in 1624 and remained as colonists for 37 years. The Spanish invaded and occupied northemmost Taiwan in 1626, but were driven out by the Dutch 16 years later in 1642. The Dutch were finally dislodged in 1661 by invading forces from the mainland led by the Ming dynasty loyalist Cheng Cheng- kung, whose latinized name, Koxinga, derives from his ennoblement by the Ming court as Kuo Hsing Yeh, or Lord of the Imperial Sumame. Koxinga hoped to use Taiwan as his base in the fight to overthrow the Ching dynasty and restore the Ming dynasty. In 1884 the French occupied northemmost Taiwan following a dispute with China over the Yunnan-Indochina border. In March 1885 they also occupied the Pescadores, but withdrew from both the Pescadores and Taiwan three months later under the terms of a treaty with China.
