Population Ancient Syria, one of the relatively few territories whose name has remained virtually unchanged throughout history, also roughly corresponds to the size of the modern country of the same name. The region was initially dominated by the Hittite culture and fell under the influence of various others such as the Amorites, Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians and Persians. While it was influenced by these cultures, and conducted considerable profitable trade with each, it was also home to one of the ancient worlds highly advanced peoples. Within a century, Hellenized rule was virtually in shambles and the east was in complete political disarray. Into the void came Mithridates VI of Pontus, who with his own conquests, drew Romes eye even farther east. The rampant spread of Piracy along the southern coast of modern Turkey (Cilicia, Lycia and Pamphylia) brought further Roman interference. In 66 BC, a campaign led by Pompey the Great essentially brought the whole region, Syria included, under Roman control. In 64 BC, Syrian Kings were ousted, and Pompey officially annexed Syria as a Roman province. Under Roman rule, Syria would eventually prosper again. Despite serving as a frontier buffer zone, Syrias ports and trade routes with the far east were important economic forces. Grain, fruits, cloth, glass, wool, linen, textiles, pottery, timber and resin were all exported in abundance. Dyes too, especially the purple dye extracted from mollusks on the Syrian shore were of particular importance.

Both the anti-Syrian and pro-Syrian protests of March 2005 are part of a complex search for social peace in a troubled region Ken Simons On September 11, 1952, a general strike and street protests forced the collapse of the Lebanese government. The "Rosewater Revolution" brought a new generation to power. In February and March of 2005 another generation led by the children and grandchildren of the leaders of the 1952 protests temporarily brought down another government. The Rosewater and "Cedar" Revolu-tions point to the maturity and depth of political traditions in Lebanon, a country that has been continuously under multi-party parliamentary rule since independence. Democratic structures may have been more formal than real during the 1975-89 civil war, but the ease with which former enemies reverted to political roles was a tribute to the persistence of democratic culture. Lebanon was once the centre of the Phoenician civilization. It later came under Roman, Byzantine, and eventually Ottoman rule, during which the province gained autonomous status under a Christian governor. With the defeat of the Ottoman empire in WWI, France gained a League of Nations mandate over Lebanon and modern-day Syria. Both were occupied by the Allies during WWII, but were granted conditional independence Lebanon in 1941, and Syria in 1944 prior to the Allied withdrawal in 1946.

In replacing his father, the late President Hafiz al-Assad, Syria's current President, Bashar al-Assad, urgently needed to demonstrate his command of his country's situation even more than other relatively new Arab leaders, such as Jordan's King Abdullah or Morocco's King Muhammad. For Bashar al-Assad selection as the replacement for his father, within minutes of Assad's death on June 10, 2000, had stunned Syria's entire system, despite the years of preparing public opinion for this succession. Having failed to put forward a clear and effective program of internal reform, the young President sought to make up for his domestic failure in the realm of foreign affairs. Here, no surprise, the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict provided the most visible opportunity to establish his leadership credentials, especially in the aftermath of the democratic election of Ariel Sharon as Israel's new Prime Minister, a man reviled in the Arab world. During the recent Arab Summit in Beirut, the young President capitalized on the absence of the Egyptian, Libyan and Palestinian leaders (among others) to strike a positive chord with audiences in Syria and across the Arab world. In a well-rehearsed, self-assured manner reminiscent of his late father, Bashar al-Assad aimed a provocative lecture at his colleagues, supporting the Palestinians' "right of resistance," calling upon Arab countries to sever their relations with Israel, urging an Iraqi-Kuwaiti reconciliation, and endorsing Saudi Crown Prince Abdallah's peace initiative.
