Syria joined with Egypt in the United Arab Republic in 1958, but withdrew in 1961. Independent Syria has been characterized by economic growth, political instability, and hostility toward Israel. In 1981 Israel exacerbated the situation by annexing the Golan Heights, captured from Syria in the Six-Day War (1967). After Assad died suddenly in June 2000, his son, Bashar al-Assad, who had been groomed to succeed his father since 1994, became president. The son was regarded as an advocate of a free-market economy and political change, but movement toward both has proceeded slowly and has at times been reversed or hindered. Syria strongly opposed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and was accused by U.S. government officials of supplying aid to Iraq and helping Iraqi officials to escape from U.S. forces. A new cabinet with a mandate to push reforms forward was appointed in Sept., 2003. In October, Israel struck at what it called a terrorist training base in Syria in retaliation for suicide-bombing attacks in Israel; it was the first Israeli strike against Syrian territory in 20 years. Simmering grievances among the nations Kurds erupted into rare antigovernment protests in NE Syria in Mar., 2004. In August and September Syria blatantly forced Lebanon to extend President Lahouds term, an act that was denounced by the UN Security Council.

Although most of the over two thousand detained have been released, tens including children, are said to have been referred for trial. No official investigation has been conducted by the Syrian authorities into the mass arbitrary arrests, torture and deaths in custody of Kurds following clashes that led to the killing of at least 30 Kurds. Syrian Kurds continue to be subjected to serious human rights violations including identity-based discrimination, tens being denied nationality, and restrictions on the use of their language and culture. Text of original appeal There have been no official investigations into violent events in March 2004, in which at least 30 Kurds were killed, over two thousand arrested, and many reportedly tortured. On 31 March 2005 Amnesty International welcomed the news that 312 Syrian Kurds were to be released, reportedly all the Kurds that remained in detention following the March 2004 events ( further information Syrian Kurds suffer from identity-based discrimination, including severe restrictions on Kurdish language and culture. More than 200,000 Kurdish people in Syria are denied nationality, and have restricted access to basic rights. Kurdish human rights defenders are at risk of arrest, torture and ill-treatment, and unfair trial and imprisonment.

Extractions: Security forces reportedly fired live bullets into the Kurdish section of the crowd when tensions rose between rival Arab and Kurdish fans during a football match in March 2004, in the north-eastern town of Qamishli. Several people were killed. The next day, police officers opened fire on a funeral procession for Kurds killed the previous day. Subsequent protests and riots across the Kurdish-populated areas resulted in the deaths of over 30 Kurdish people and one police officer. Exact numbers of dead and injured are not known, as there has been no government investigation into the events at the stadium, funeral or subsequent protests. At the end of March 2005, the Syrian government announced plans to release 312 Kurds, reportedly all those who remained in detention following the March 2004 events. Perhaps one of the most alluring aspects of Syria is the hospitality of its people towards strangers and travelers. The kindness and tolerance exhibited by the Syrian people is often attributed to a number of historical factors. These include Syrias location as a crossroads between various civilizations, and the mutual generosity and cooperation that results from living in a desert landscape. Arabic is the official language of Syria and the mother tongue of approximately 90 percent of the population. Other languages such as Kurdish, Armenian, Aramaic, Circassian, French, and English are also spoken in various regions of the country. Almost three-fourths of Syrians are Sunni Muslims, while minority Shi'ite, Druze and Alawites account for 15 percent of the population. Various Christian sects represent the remaining 10 percent.

The Neolithic of the Levant (500 Page Book Online) Tell Halaf Culture A tell (mound) site in the Khabur Valley in northeast Syria close to the Turkish border which has given its name to a widespread culture of north Mesopotamia and Syria with radiocarbon dates in the range 5500 - 4500 BC. It is characterized by a fine painted pottery with designs in black, red and white on a buff background. The finest polychrome Halaf vessels come from the potter's workshop at Arpachiyah . This site and Tepe Gawra have produced typical Eastern Halaf ware while a rather different Western Halaf version is known from such Syrian sites as Carchemish and Halaf itself. Although no Halaf settlement has heen extensively excavated some buildings have been excavated: the misleadingly named tholoi of Arpachiyah, circular domed structures approached through long rectangular anterooms. These buildings, constructed of mud-brick sometimes on stone foundations may have been for ritual use (one contained a large number of female figurines) but other circular buildings on this and other sites were probably simply houses. The Halaf population practised dry farming (based on natural rainfall without the help of irrigation) growing emmer wheat, two rowed barley and flax; they kept cattle, sheep and goats. As well as their fine painted pottery the Halaf communities made baked clay female figurines and stamp seals of stone; these latter artefacts are often thought to mark the development of concepts of personal property (because at a later date seals are used to produce marks of ownership). This may be due to the fact that the Kingdom of Jerusalem lacked a large scientific centre like Toledo and Palermo for Islamic knowledge that Christians could use. However, some scientists, traders and warriors managed through observation to transmit some knowledge on agriculture, shipping and industry from the eastern Mediterranean to Europe. It is important to note that relations between Muslims and crusaders during the crusades were not completely hostile; they were friendly and amicable during periods of truce and peace. The cementing of these relations was due to the presence of the Christian colonies among the Islamic emirates such as Aleppo, Damascus, Homs and Hama, in addition to the citadels and forts like Shezar whose ruins are still visible on the Orontes, in north Syria. In order to secure their colonies in the Arab east the crusaders had to depend on the local natives, both Muslims and Christians, for agriculture and building and repair of fortifications and churches.
