We offer a free East Coast dance lesson with admission. The dance lesson starts at 7:30. This is an all ages event DJed by the swiningest DJs in Vancouver. This night is a mix of East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop. If you don't know what Lindy Hop is, well its hard to explain and you'll just have to come out and see. East Coast is a fun, easy to learn dance and our DJs will get you out of your seat and on the dance floor. Sadly, Swing dancing as we knew it at the Vancouver Legion is over. After closing down to swing dancing a few years ago, the Legion has recently re-opened to dancing under new management. If you liked the Legion in its previous format come out to North Shore Swing for a fun night on the town.

West Coast Swing originated from a dance called the Savoy Style Lindy, which was done at the Savoy Ballroom in New York in the early 1930's, although not invented by it was indirectly spawned by a man whose name was Dean Collins who also danced at the Savoy while in New York. Collins came to California in the 1930's to get into the movies and brought with him his version of the "Savoy Style Lindy." The Savoy was an immediate success with its block-long dance floor and a raised double bandstand. Nightly dancing attracted most of the best dancers in the New York area. Stimulated by the presence of great dancers and the best black bands, music at the Savoy was largely Swinging Jazz. One evening in 1927, following Lindbergh's flight to Paris, a local dance enthusiast named "Shorty George" Snowden was watching some of the dancing couples. A newspaper reporter asked him what dance they were doing, and it just so happened that there was a newspaper with an article about Lindbergh's flight sitting on the bench next to them. The title of the article read, "Lindy Hops The Atlantic," and George just sort of read that and said, "Lindy Hop" and the name stuck. In the mid 1930's, a bouncy six beat variant was named the Jitterbug by the band leader Cab Calloway when he introduced a tune in 1934 entitled "
