HickokSports.com - History - Synchronized Swimming This document is a history of synchronized swimming. It is a page in the historysection of HickokSports.com, the largest collection of sports information http://www.hickoksports.com/history/synchsw.shtml
Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search Table of Contents The great Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman, planted the first seed of what was to become synchronized swimming when she performed "water ballet" in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome in 1907. Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating.
Swimming Esthetics Taking in swimming s history and enthusiasts, its literature and fads, along withthe author s own immersions in waters from Turkey to Key West, http://www.usms.org/swimgold/esth/
Extractions: SiteMap Swimming sometimes provides esthetic delights that echo or give form to the thoughts that lots of us experience but find difficult to express. This web page is about such things. One of the inspirations for this page is a book called "Haunts of the Black Masseur", subtitled "The Swimmer as Hero", by Charles Sprawson, published in 1992 by Penguin Books. This is must reading for any dedicated swimmer with a Romantic nature. Here are comments by reviewers....... A Fascinating scrapbook about swimming, loaded with lore. . . and suffused with the mystery of the water. (The New York Times Book Review) It is Byron swimming the Hellespont and a drunken Jack London floating out to sea while roaring death chants at the stars. It is Johnny Weissmuller and Esther Williams. It is Japanese samurai diving into shallow waters from a height of sixty feet and English swimmers mastering the breaststroke by bringing tubs of frogs to poolside. Swimming - as sport, ritual, and consuming obsession - receives its most elegant and learned celebration in "Haunts of the Black Masseur". Taking in swimming's history and enthusiasts, its literature and fads, along with the author's own immersions in waters from Turkey to Key West, this book is a triumph of style, erudition, and that elusive quality called enchantment. "This oddly charming book is about swimming in the same way that "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" is about Harley-Davidsons. . . .Brings alive . . . the pleasures of the water and of measuring oneself against it. Reading "Haunts of the Black Masseur" is like standing beside a cool pool on a steamy summer day: the temptation to leap in is irresistible."

Transpersonal Swimming Institute Swim School Transpersonal Swimming Institute is an adult swimming school that works solely with adults who have a fear in water, shallow or deep, pool and ocean. The Class You've Been Awaiting, Your Whole Life. What is swimming? At TSI, swimming means confidence in water. When you learn to "swim" at TSI, you learn confidence, panic prevention in shallow and deep water, and how to move from here to there in the shallow and deep. You'll go to deep water only when it sounds like fun. You'll be able to play and rest in shallow or deep water independently. Then, it's simple to learn strokes. If you're afraid in water, learning strokes is not your next step. Learning to be in control in water is! You can't learn to swim until you are in control...in the middle and at the side of the pool, at the surface and below. You can only learn to swim in deep water once you're comfortable in deep water.

Extractions: The start of a triathlon can be nerve-wracking, tiring, intimidating, frustrating, and even discouraging (why do we do this sport). But don't let all this get to you! The start for everyone is a crazy cluster of splashing, starts and stops, physical contact, and swimmers trying to separate from each other. Here are some tips to deal with what some consider being the toughest part of any triathlon Over the years I've seen so many fit people arrive at the start of an Ironman event more than ready to complete the huge challenge, yet they then come to grief on Ironman day - mostly because of silly errors that could have been avoided. Ironman performance is built on three key pillars. Fitness is obvious; you need to be able to cover the distance physically. Arriving at the race, healthy, injury free and fresh is difficult but by and large people are doing a better job of this than ever. What they fail to do is MAXIMISE their potential Ironman triathlon performance on the day. (Brendon Downey/EnduranceCoach)

An uptight British crime novelist, she's made great sums of money by imagining Inspector Durwell's investigations, but still worries that her publisher, John (Charles Dance) is paying more attention to the younger, hipper French writer he's just signed she observes their brief interaction closely, as though she's searching out a reason for her latest, though apparently minor, block. "I'm not the person you think I am," she insists, when John appears to be dismissing her concerns. In an effort to calm her, John offers the use of his house in the south of France, the Luberon region, where the sun dapples back roads and folks spend long afternoons at the local café. Sarah agrees, thinking she might write something other than her usual ("I'm tired of murders and investigations"). She unpacks her suitcase with care, removes her belted trench coat, and, seating herself at the café, offers her pale face to the sun. At last, she has nothing to watch and hours of solitude stretching before her.
