Extractions: The sugar glider is a small, nocturnal, arboreal marsupial native to New Guinea and the southern and eastern coasts of Australia. They inhabit open forest areas, in the tropical or coastal forests. They are very social animals, living in colonies of six to ten animals. Dominant males mark the territory and group members with scent gland secretions. The group nets communally in leaf-lined tree holes. During extreme cold periods or food scarcity, sugar gliders conserve energy by going into a semi-hibernation state (torpor) for periods of up to 16 hours per day. Physical Characteristics Sugar gliders have soft, velvety fur, which is gray dorsally with a central black stripe and cream-colored underside. Similar to the American flying squirrel, sugar gliders possess a patagium (gliding membrane) that stretches between their front and hind legs. Being marsupials, the females raise their young in a pouch. Mature sugar gliders weigh 90 to 120 grams, with males typically larger than females. They are about five inches long from their nose to the base of their tail. The tail adds another six inches to their length, which is used as a rudder to navigate as they glide. Gliding distances are reported up to 150 feet. Being a nocturnal prey species, their eyes are large, protruding and widely spaced. Sugar gliders have four toes on their hind feet, with an opposable first digit and partial fusion of the second and third digit. Males possess well-developed scent glands on their forehead (frontal) and upper chest (throat), which appear as bald patches.

Extractions: African Hedgehog African hedgehogs are remarkably hearty pets considering the short amount of time they have been maintained in captivity and how much there is still to learn about their captive dietary requirements. However, you may be faced with a situation where your pet needs medical attention. It is advisable to find a veterinarian who will be willing to treat your unusual pet before an emergency arises. Emergency Care If you have an emergency with your hedgehog, there are a few things you can do for your pet until you can get to a veterinary clinic. Always transport an ill hedgehog in a small secure container that can be kept warm, particularly in cold climates. If an ill hedgehog becomes chilled, it can lead to serious and potentially fatal complications. A hot water bottle or any of the chemical hand warmers can be placed under a soft towel in the bottom of the container to keep the pet warm. Make sure the lid of the container is perforated for ventilation. When the weather is cold, warm up the car before placing the hedgehog in it. If your hedgehog is weak or is unable to move, it may be in severe shock caused by a variety of conditions (such as heat stroke, liver or kidney failure, septicemia, severe dehydration, intestinal blockage, etc.) or may be suffering from a neurological disease or a fractured limb. Handle your pet as little as possible in case there is an injury to the spine and to reduce further stress. Slide the hedgehog onto a piece of firm cardboard or thin wood to transport it to a small box padded with soft towels. Place a heating pad, hot water bottle or chemical hand warmer underneath the towels to provide heat. Get your pet to a veterinarian immediately.
Sugar Gliders, Possums, Marsupials As a general rule, sugar gliders and other pets do not mix. But you can do your best to avoid this by taking good care of your pet. http://animal-world.com/encyclo/critters/Sugar_Gliders/Sugar_Gliders.php

Extractions: Apache Junction, Ariz. A sugar glider is a small arboreal marsupial found in the forests of Australia, as well as in Tasmania, New Guinea and the neighboring islands of Indonesia. This little creature is a member of the same order that includes kangaroos, opossums, wombats and Tasmanian devils. The sugar glider can make a fascinating and unique pet since they are reasonably easy to care for; however, sugar gliders require more time than most small caged mammals and have some specialized needs. Sugar gliders are named for their preference for sweet foods and their ability to glide through the air like a flying squirrel. This gliding is made possible by a thin membrane of skin called a patagium that extends between their front and back legs. They can glide over 150 feet and use their long tails as rudders to control the direction of flight. Gliders have odd qualities, such as opposable fingers and toes, and very soft tongues. Like all marsupials, the female has a pouch in which the baby glider is carried. The sugar glider's head and body measures five to six inches with a bushy tail of equal length. The ears are constantly in motion, moving independently of one another to pick up the smallest sounds. The eyes are very large and dark and are oriented toward the sides of the head to allow a wider field of vision to help them hunt at night. The adult glider weighs four to six ounces, with the male being larger. Males have a scent gland in the middle of their forehead, which looks like a little diamond shaped bald spot.

Extractions: Pet shops commonly carry fish for home aquariums, small birds such as parakeets, small mammals such as fancy rats and hamsters, and small reptiles such as lizards and snakes. Mice, small goldfish, and other animals that serve to be live food (called feeders) for reptiles and fish are also usually sold. Puppies and kittens Less common in pet stores are larger mammals such as dogs and cats. In part, these animals have become less popular in stores because pet stores have received considerable bad press for their inappropriate care of puppies and kittens, which need socialization and are vulnerable to illnesses, and for their purchasing the animals from puppy mills. Most shops that carry puppies and kittens charge inflated prices for them, far above the common rate for the same animal from a breeder.

Extractions: Your Information Source for Small Exotic Pets Home Critter Central Sugar Gliders Home Sweet Home When it comes to glider cages, the bigger the better. Also, height is more important than depth or width. We keep our gliders in pairs, housed in cages which are 24" wide by 18" deep and 40" tall. This is a good size for happy gliders, but is based on the assumption that the animals will have plenty of play-time outside their cage. A wire-mesh cage should have spacing of no more than 1/2 inch by 1 inch. A finch cage is also a good choice since the bars are close enough to prevent escape. Furnish the cage with non-toxic branches for climbing and gnawing. A nine to twelve inch exercise wheel will be used by most gliders, especially if introduced to them at a young age. Also, be sure to provide your pets with a snug, comfortable sleeping spot. A wooden nest box for finches works well, but will need to be replaced occasionally. Feedin' Time The most commonly recommended diet for sugar gliders includes up to eighty-five percent fruit, with the balance of their diet composed of dry cat food. This diet presents four major problems: It doesn't accurately duplicate a wild sugar glider's diet

I can't ever pronounce her last name right, so she said, "Call me Dr. C." So I do. And so does everybody else! She is awesome and I love her. She's also going to be writing about sugar glider care for the GliderVet newsletter All of us at SunCoast Sugar Gliders are grateful to Dr. C. for always being there when we need her. One of her best attributes is that she will actually come to us, so we don't have to sit in a cold, sterile lobby waiting on a doctor to tend to our needs. Dr. C. says that the best way to diagnose exotic animals like us is to see us in the habitat that our humans keep us in. Many problems that develop with exotic pets are caused by our humans not keeping us in the right environment or feeding us right. Dr. C. makes sure that doesn't happen. Here's more about Dr. C., my (our) vet: Janine M. Cianciolo, DVM received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from The Ohio State University - College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. While there, she was awarded the Kaytee Avian and Special Species Excellence Award, for demonstrated excellence in exotic medicine. Dr. C. dedicates her practice primarily to the care of exotics and wildlife. She certainly sees a number of cats and dogs in her practice, but is best known for her care of unusual animals.
