The 53rd Weather Recon Squadron based at Keesler AFB on the Mississippi coast works with the National Hurricane Center in tracking and providing information concerning developing tropical events in the Atlantic basin. You may join this group of aviators as they are briefed for their mission into Hurricane Opal. They will be flying their WC-130 aircraft at 10,000 ft. Upon completing the brief and flight with the hurricane hunters, close out the window and return to this page to continue your tasking. The briefing the pilots of the 53rd Weather Recon Squadron received at Keesler AFB, requires them to fly their plane into the eye of Hurricane Opal at 10,000 feet. The position of the storm is expected to be at 23 degrees North and 92 degrees West , headed in a North-Eastern direction by the time the WC-130 ( fact sheet ) makes its first run into the hurricane's eye.

Extractions: Students will track a tropical storm as it develops or evolves in the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean using real-time data information from the Internet. Students will look for connections between storm severity, air pressure and wind speed. This activity should take 5-10 minutes per day and must be done during the storm event. It would be helpful to have a wall chart to plot the direction the storm is moving even though the path is plotted on the web site. Students can be asked to keep a daily log of their storm prediction and then each day that prediction can be reviewed and updated. Comparisons can be made to predictions made at the Weather Channel or other on local news outlets. Everyday one group could be asked to write a radio storm forecast and that could be read to the class. Students could also update a class website making a storm forecast. It is also recommended that a concurrent recording of weather observations be maintained in class or individually including an after school observation to confirm weather that is reported and to assess weather forecasts.

Extractions: In pilot experiments, on each trial, a single dot in apparent motion, followed a diagonal linear trajectory from the lower-left of the screen to the upper-right. At a horizontal position indicated by fixed vertical markers, the trajectory deviated either clockwise or anticlockwise; the observer reported the perceived direction of deviation. Using a method of constant stimuli, deviation thresholds at the 84% point were estimated. The length of the trajectories and the dot velocities were adjusted to obtain optimal thresholds (typically 2Ë). In the main experiments, the actual number of dots moving (N) was varied, each having the optimal parameters determined above. The average orientation of the trajectories was fixed between trials, but within a trial the N trajectories were jittered about the average; deviation from parallelism could not be used as a cue. In one set of experiments each of the N trajectories deviated the same amount, and thresholds were only mildly affected by variation in N (typically 10Ë for N=10). In another set only one of the N trajectories deviated; here thresholds increased rapidly with N, with thresholds as large as 30Ë for N = 4, and with most observers performing unreliably when N was 6 or more.

Extractions: Hurricanes along the east coast of North America attract the media's attention each year. This is our attempt to synthesize data collected over time. Monitoring hurricane activity has, in the last couple of years, undergone quite a dramatic change due to several significant events in the HF/LF world. These include: Military Monitoring The most common question that arises is 'Where can I hear the Hurricane Hunters?'. As documented in many places, the famous Miami Monitor HF network no longer exists; most of the Hunters traffic takes place on Satcom. However, they still do use HF from time to time. Keep an eye on the MARS frequency of 13927 USB. This frequency is often used by the Hunters to do phone patches for various news reporting organizations, and on occasion to check in when Satcom is having problems. Coast Guard weather bulletins are transmitted at regular intervals from various sites. These are automated broadcasts which give weather synopsis for their areas. These broadcasts (known as 'MSI' broadcasts) have regular schedules; see the link at the bottom of the page for more information.
