Extractions: Wanted: 11 new school superintendents. Must be able to move fast. That's what the Los Angeles Unified School District ( LAUSD ) seemed to be looking for in the wake of the LAUSD board's unanimous vote to divide the nation's second largest school district into 11 autonomous minidistricts by July 1. Interim Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines proposed the reorganization as a way to deal with the district's management problems and low test scores. In the latest round of statewide standardized testing, not a single LAUSD grade level scored near the national average in such disciplines as math, language, reading, and spelling. "Student achievement is the only reason to reorganize," said board President Genethia Hudley Hayes. "We've failed every sector of our youngsters." Seventy percent of parents of school-aged children in the district rate their public schools as fair to poor, according to a recent Los Angeles Times poll.

Extractions: OCR's Testing (Mis)Guidance: Anti-Education, Anti-Civil Rights Roger Clegg * The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights ("OCR") has decided to wade into the controversy surrounding the use of standardized tests in primary, secondary, and higher education. In the spring last year, OCR began circulating "draft guidelines" on "Nondiscrimination in High-Stakes Testing." The draft was leaked, apparently by disgruntled college admission officers, to The Chronicle of Higher Education, which put the guidelines on its website. Much controversy ensued, culminating in OCR head Norma Cantu being brought in to testify before the House Education and Workforce Committee in July. Cantu protested that the draft was just preliminary and promised that future drafts would be more widely shared. In December, a revised version still just a draft was released, with a considerably longer text and title: "The Use of Tests When Making High-Stakes Decisions for Students: A Resource Guide for Educators and Policymakers." The guidelines, which challenge the use of standardized tests when they have a "disparate impact" on racial or ethnic groups, remain deeply and fundamentally flawed, however.

Extractions: Your browser does not support script Home Application Process Financial Aid Ask a Parent or Alumnus? The mission of the Guidance Department is multifaceted. First, each student will be provided with personal/individual counseling. Adolescence can be a time filled with turmoil for some children as they mature and grow into adulthood. It is essential that they have available to them a qualified professional to help them sort out their issues and talk with them. The guidance department of Admiral Farragut will provide crisis intervention therapy when necessary and then will take the lead in finding a reputable resource to provide any extended counseling or other psychiatric services. As an intermediary step between the student having a need for a counseling session with the guidance counselor and an actual meeting with that student and/or their family, the student will have the opportunity to designate a staff person of their choice to help the with their concerns. These advisory periods will occur pro re nata (as needed). Second, if necessary, Admiral Farragut Academy will provide initial family related counseling services. Of course, if either the personal or family counseling sessions uncover issues that require more in-depth therapy referrals will be made to the appropriate agencies in the community so that, ideally, the student can continue their studies and the family or student can get the help they need.
