Stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. Collectors, hobbyists, and historians can explore their world through the stories told by postage stamp designs. The collecting and study of postage stamps and related items is known as philately (a coined Greek word meaning, literally, "love of what is free of further tax"). One of the attractions of stamp collecting is the ease of starting a collection. With access to enough incoming mail, a person can have a collection without any expense. Literally tens of thousands of stamps, including many of the older issues, can be bought for a penny apiece or less. Little special equipment is required. A collector needs only an album to house the stamps, protective plastic pages, some hinges or other types of mounts to attach the stamps to the pages, and a pair of stamp tongs with which to handle them. Help is available to anyone asking information or advice, or just for sharing of the hobby.

Hundertwasser believed that modern art should be acceptable to everyone, so he put it on postage stamps. In that same vein, this site offers everyone a chance to take a tour of this art for free, with no advertising or identity tracking cookies. Students, collectors, gallerists and artists from around the world know the site as the one location where they can find everything there is to know about the artist and his stamps. Even though only 35 stamps are needed in order to have a complete Hundertwasser collection, truly complete collections are rare. Part of the reason for this is that many of the stamps issued as minisheets were printed as numbered, limited editions and bought up by art collectors and galleries. Few initially found their way onto the philatelic market. Correspondingly, many of the stamps issued as regular commemoratives did not find their way into the art world. That means that many Hundertwasser collectors have only half a collection. Here, however, you can view every stamp issued with a Hundertwasser design, from the Cuban issue from 1967 right up to the recent New Zealand Universal Post issue. You'll also find rough frafts, progressive proofs, die prrofs and first day covers of his stamps aw well as examples of some of his other populist work in the form of telephone cards.

Extractions: Back to main stamp page I am often asked for advice by people who have inherited or been given a stamp collection and now want to sell it. Here are some pointers that I have put together. First of all, dont get your hopes up. Many people see boxes or albums full of old stamps and think "bonanza"! The reality is that the vast majority of stamps are common and are worth very little - even very old stamps. It's also true that most collectors pursue the hobby for enjoyment and not as an investment. So, dont order that new BMW just yet! Still, there are exceptions and some collections can be worth a great deal. How can you get an idea of a collection's value? The easiest way is if the original collector left some records that detail the contents of the collection and its value. If the collection was insured, the amount of insurance that was taken out can be a guide. Be aware, however, that collectors value their collections at retail - what it would cost to replace the collection buying from stamp dealers. There's also a natural tendency for a collector to exaggerate a collection's value. When you go to sell the collection, dont be surprised if you are offered only 10-20% of the "value" of the collection or even less. If you cannot get an idea of the value of the collection from records left by the original collector, you have several other ways to approach the problem.
