Scribblings: St. Patrick's Day I was glad to teach them the fun songs because the others were so darn depressing.Where did st. Patricks day come from? There was a young man taken into http://www.twhgrafx.com/scribblings/archives/000244.html
Extractions: These are my sometimes scattered and unedited disorganized thoughts, ramblings, anecdotes and whatnot. « Battle!!!!!! Main Li'l Abner Pix » There wasnt much festivity at our house this year. We had the traditional and very delicious corned beef and cabbage and I wore my County Sligo sweatshirt but that was about it. At the last minute, I thought to try and get the kids some greenery to wear. By the time I got around to going to the store, though, all of it was gone. All of it was probably gone the first week of March. Anyway, the kids didnt wear green today unless it was on their underwear. Well, I thought to myself, we are American. I dont think were hyphenated Americans anymore. Before I got married, I was very much an Irish American. My grandparents came to the United States from County Sligo sometime before WWI. The whole family could sing. Just about the whole family drank, which is not something Im particularly proud of. We always had corned beef and cabbage for dinner and my father always wanted a toast. Wed click our glasses and he would try to say Slainte. When I was 15, I happened to see the Scanlon family crest. It was really cool looking, with fierce looking anibeasts on the shield. I think they were crowned lions but its been a long time. Anyway, I made a template and used it as a design for my hooked rug project at school. I had the most fun working on it!
Slugger O'Toole: A St Paddy's Day For All... As it stands at the minute st. patricks day in Belfast is nothing more The event planned for st. patricks day, will be a BELFAst CITY COUNCIL event. http://www.sluggerotoole.com/archives/2005/07/a_st_paddys_day.php
Extractions: A GENEROUS response in the Andytown News to the news that Belfast City Council is to support the St Patrick's Day carnival. There is also an acknowledgement that nationalists "will be reasonable and magnanimous when it comes to those aspects of the St Patrick's Day celebrations that many unionists genuinely have trouble with". For non-nationalists, that would, in many cases, include the flying of the Irish flag. Just recently, Dr John Nagle of Queen's University's Institute of Irish Studies examined attitudes in Northern Ireland towards St Patrick's Day. Some of the responses he got are below. A Presbyterian student summed up a typical Unionist view of celebrations in Belfast: I went into Belfast city centre and I wish I had not. Lots of drinking and drunk people making fools of themselves, annoying children blowing whistles and lots of Irish flags being waved. I felt scared to look at anyone in the wrong way for fear of being attacked. I would like to see future events where Unionists could be made feel welcome. As it stands at the minute St. Patricks Day in Belfast is nothing more than a republican festival. A Protestant, Irish Nationalist who went to the celebrations at Belfast City Hall with his children articulated a similar position:

Extractions: Every March 17th, there is a mad rush of people all over the world to declare themselves Irish Bog Trotters by putting on something emerald green in color, swilling green beer, and marching about singing sentimental American songs written about Ireland. These antics are thought to make every person on earth not only Irish, but Catholic as well, even if they were Protestant, Jewish, Moslem, Buddhists or Shinto. I wholly support this wonderful camaraderie on the 17th of March, but how come, on the 18th of March, we all revert to regular beer and continue throwing grenades at each other. St. Patrick tried to teach the Irish to be civilized, but the whole world keeps acting like barbarians lost in a fog of Guinness Ale. Regardless of your faith or ethnic background you may continue with your St Patrick Parties, parades and fun, but mark on your forehead (or a Shamrock) with a green Magic Marker one word, PEACE

Saint Patrick - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia Legend also credits Patrick with teaching the Irish about the concept of the popularly associated with him as his feast, known as st. Patrick s day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Patrick
Extractions: (Redirected from St. Patrick Statue of Saint Patrick Saint Patrick (died March 17 or patron saint of Ireland , along with Saint Brigit and Saint Columba He was born somewhere along the west coast of Britain in the little settlement or village of Bannavem of Taburnia ( vico banavem taburniae in his Confessio ), which has never been identified with certainty. Sites suggested include Dumbarton Furness ] and Somerset , or the coastline of Wales or northern France; another possibility put forward for his birthplace is the settlement of Bannaventa in Northamptonshire , for raiders captured him with "many thousands of people" according to Patrick's autobiographical Confessio , and sold them as slaves in Ireland. edit In the Confessio Patrick mentions his father Calpornius, a deacon , civil official, and a town councillor, son of Potitus, who was a Romano-British priest. An old tradition makes his mother from the upper-class Gaulish family of Martin of Tours , though Patrick himself makes no such claim. According to his

The first reason is because the green shamrock leaf is a symbol of Saint Patrick and Ireland. The Irish say a shamrock brings good luck. The second reason is because Ireland is called the "Emerald Isle" with lots of green pastures. The third reason is because the people of Ireland would burn green leaves to spread over their land to make their soil richer.

Extractions: 5. This would be an excellent time for a cooking experiment. Remember the story "Green Eggs and Ham?" Try making some green eggs, green vanilla pudding pops, or anything else that would be suitable for your age group. Green food coloring could be added to white frosting before icing some cupcakes. Let the children taste the frosting while it is white and ask them to predict how it will taste after it becomes green. Were they right?
Extractions: Some 1,500 years ago a teenage boy from what is now Great Britain was kidnapped and enslaved by marauders from a neighboring country. Not since Paris absconded with Helen of Troy has a kidnapping so changed the course of history. The invading marauders came from fifth-century Ireland. The teenager they captured eventually escaped, but returned voluntarily some years later. In the meantime, he had become convinced that he was handpicked by God to convert the entire country to Christianity. Apparently, he was right. In the process of converting the primitive people of Ireland, however, the former slave experienced a conversion, too. In the years that followed, he not only shared God with the people of Ireland, but also grew in his understanding of God through them. And so it was that a young Briton named Patricius died an Irishman named Patrick. And neither Ireland nor Christianity was ever quite the same. This conviction of Thomas Cahill, Catholic author of the best-selling book
