Extractions: I had always known that St. Patrick was important to the Irish people, but I guess I never realized just how important until I traveled to Ireland with my dad in June of 2000. Everywhere we visited seemed to have a story connected to St. Patrick. For instance, St. Patrick is said to have driven the snakes from Ireland on the mountain now called Croagh Patrick. Those stories, including the one about the snakes, made St. Patrick seem larger than life. In fact, they almost made it hard to remember that he was an ordinary man who, in trying to bring Christs love to the Irish people, lived an extraordinary life. To Ireland and Back Again Patrick, the son of a Roman official, originally came to Ireland as a slave at about the age of 16. He spent the next six years working as a shepherd before escaping and returning to his family in Britain. During his time in captivity, Patrick turned to God for companionship and comfort.

Extractions: Saint Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland and also of Nigeria. He was born probably in Scotland (traditionally at Kilpatrick near Dumbarton) in 387 AD as Maewyn Succat and was of Romano-British origin, the son of a deacon and grandson of a priest (celibacy was not a requirement in those days) so he had a religious upbringing although, in later years, he admitted to paying little heed to religion at the time. When he was about sixteen years old he was captured by pirates and sold into slavery in then-pagan Ireland and spent six years in captivity, working as a shepherd for a Miliucc, a chieftain who was also a Druid priest. He learnt the Celtic language and customs, which was to prove very useful in later years.

His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Romans living in Britain . At the age of about fourteen, Patrick was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped at the age of twenty and returned to Britain, reuniting with his parents and later becoming one of the first Christian missionaries to Ireland. According to popular legend he chased all of the snakes out of Ireland although some people say that there were never any snakes in Ireland because of the cold and wet climate! We do not know on what date he was born and died but it is possible that March 17 was either his birth or death date, and it is the date popularly associated with him as his Feast Day (known as St Patrick's Day). Extractions: SAINT PATRICK Saint Holiday Figure St. Patrick is revered by Catholics for establishing Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century AD. The precise dates and details of his life are unclear, but some points are generally agreed: as a teen he was captured and sold into slavery in Ireland, and six years later he escaped to Gaul (now France) where he later became a monk. Around 432 he returned to Ireland as a missionary and succeeded in converting many of the island's tribes to Christianity. Late in life he wrote the brief text Confessio detailing his life and ministry. His feast day, March 17, is celebrated as a day of Irish pride in many parts of the world.

Extractions: Saint Patrick or Patricius is the patron saint of Ireland (Ireland's Celtic name is Eire) said to have been born near the site of Kilpatrick, Scotland. Patrick was born to a Romanized family in Britain probably in the first half of the 5th century. Patrick was born to Christian Briton parents. His father, Calpurnius, was a deacon and town councillor. Patrick's grandfather was a priest. He was kidnapped by Irish pirates and sold to a Druid chieftain at the age of 14-16 around 405. The young boy was sustained by Faith during his six years of slavery. During this time not only was Patrick a shepherd (it is said that he herded pigs for his master), but he repented of his past sins and prayed earnestly. Patrick, after much praying, ran over 200 miles and requested an Irish seaman to take him on board. At first the captain refused, as Patrick turned around he began to pray. The seaman called Patrick back to the ship and took him home.

Extractions: St. Patrick's Day Return to Holidays St Patrick was born about 385 A.D. Where he is originally from is undetermined, but it is thought to be either Scotland or what is now Wales and his real name was Maewyn. His family belonged to the Roman Catholic Church but by his own admission he was covetous, licentious, materialistic, and generally heathen. Somewhere between the ages of fourteen and sixteen he, along with hundreds of other young men and women, were captured by Irish marauders and sold as slaves back in Ireland. While serving as a slave he turned toward God and realized the importance of having God in his life. In writing about this period of slavery he wrote: "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same." "I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain." After six years, he eventually was able to escape and he went to Gaul to study at a monastery. Here he developed a great desire to convert others to Christianity.

Extractions: St Patrick's Day, the festival of the patron saint of Ireland, is celebrated each year on 17 March. Unlike most other national days, St Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world, particularly in the US where people commemorate the day by, amongst other things, colouring rivers and beer green - in Ireland people celebrate it by going green after drinking rivers of beer. St Patrick So who was St Patrick? And why is he so fondly remembered by so many people around the world 1500 years after his death? Legend has it that St Patrick was born Maewyn Succat, to an Anglo-Roman family in Wales, in 415 AD. When he was 16 years of age he was captured by an Irish pagan warlord, Niall of the Nine Hostages, and he spent six miserable years in Ireland until he escaped to France. Maewyn went on to become a priest, changing his name to Patricius, or Patrick, which derives from the Latin for father-figure - other derivations include patrician, patron and patronize. Rather than forgetting his wretched experiences in Ireland, he decided to go back to the country that enslaved him, and he spent his later years preaching Christianity to the Irish, banishing snakes and popularizing the shamrock. He used this three-leaved grass to help explain the Trinity, how God could be three entities (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) yet, at the same time, be one. This is the reason that the shamrock is the national emblem for Ireland.
