Extractions: St. Patrick's Day - March 17th 2004 St. Patrick's Day is Ireland's greatest national holiday as well as a holy day. The date marks the anniversary of the death of the missionary who became the patron saint of Ireland. It is a happy holiday for the Irish wherever they may be - in Dublin, New York City, Boston, or San Francisco. The day celebrated with parades, speeches, festive dinners, and dances. Green is the color of the day, with thousands of little cloth shamrocks worn even by those whose forefathers never touched the shores of Ireland. It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. At the age of sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family's estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. During this time, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian.

Extractions: As I sat thinking about what I wanted to share with you this week. I thought fondly of when I was newly married and my husband and I were learning about each other's families, holidays and traditions. My husband was amazed at my excitement and spirit to celebrate and decorate our home for every holiday. He couldn't believe how I went all out, for all the holidays. I think traditions are wonderful and I am happy to say that I have carried on many from my childhood and created new traditions with my family. We all love the festivities associated with the holidays and it gives us a little break from everyday life. My tip for the week is to create a tradition in your home. A tradition can be large or small. No matter what the size traditions are special, especially to children. With St. Patrick's day nearly approaching our house is adorned with green decorations and a pot of gold windsock hanging by our front door. My children are buzzing with excitement about the leprechauns approaching visit. Years ago my children started putting their shoes by the front door on the eve before St. Patrick's day. When they awoke the mysterious leprechauns had filled their shoes with treats. Oh by the way, I forgot to mention I'm not even Irish! You don't have to be Irish to enjoy the holiday.

Extractions: and our mothers made Colcannon in the little skillet pot." by Diana Farrell Serbe St. Patrick's Day is a holiday unique to itself. There is no single personage, such as jolly old Saint Nick, to celebrate. The good Saint Patrick is overlooked in favor of the celebration of an entire nation of people and their descendants. Instead of hiring someone to dress up like Santa, we outfit ourselves in green, and celebrate whatever claim to Irish blood we have. Green derbies with shamrocks, worn by people who have no Irish roots, replace artificial beards and red stocking caps. It is also a holiday that has specified only corned beef and cabbage for its celebratory meal. As much as we love this classic, we think there may be other dishes to taste. Irish cooking reflects the temperament of the people. The Irish are a lyric group, so poetic by nature that they have a saying: 'Never harm a poet, never love a poet, and never be a poet." The Irish have given us the finest poets and writers, and their instinct toward the music inherent in language spices their food.

Instead, they opt fordelicacies such as Dublin Lawyer (lobster with Irish whiskey and cream), Steak and Guinness Pie, or Champ (mashedpotatoes with scallions). Whatever you serve, ensure your meal's success with these essential Irish ingredients: goodconversation, friends and family, and, of course, your favorite Irish whiskeys and beers.
