History Discovered uninhabited by the Portuguese navigator Jo£o da Nova Castella in 1502, St. Helena was annexed by the Dutch in 1633. The island served as a prison for South African Boers (Afrikaners) from 1900 to 1902. St. Helena is best known as the place of exile of Napoleon I, who was sent there in 1815 and who died at Longwood, near Jamestown, in 1821. His home has been maintained as a memorial.

I am a human geographer with interests in settlement, including historical settlements. At present I am course co-ordinator for our Level 1 Human Geography course (210GGY105) and give a Level 3 course entitled 'Aspects of urban development' (210GGY307). I have researched extensively on Ireland and have been President of the Geographical Society of Ireland and the Ulster Society for Irish Historical Studies. I represent Ireland on the Council of British Geography and also serve on the (Irish) National Committee for Geography. I have taught in both Canada and the USA and this interest is reflected in my jointly edited book, North America, and in my being Co-Director of Queen's University's Centre of Canadian Studies, which is housed in the School of Geography. I have for decades worked for what is now the Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA). I have also linked into the schools sector in my work for the Geographical Association (I have been President of the Belfast Branch) and for Geography Review, on the board of which I serve as Senior Examiner Advisor.
