The 265-page review by the International Olympic Committee's program commission lists facts and figures across a range of 33 criteria. The report is designed to serve as a guide for IOC members when they vote on the sports program in Singapore next month. Each of the 28 sports contested in Athens last summer will be put to a vote; any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics.

Extractions: The 117th IOC Session in Singapore voted to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the programme of the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. The Session decided that baseball and softball will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, but will not be on the programme for 2012. The two sports are, however, eligible for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Games. Unfortunately for us, the IOC Executive Board also decided that as the numbers would be kept to 26, none of the five candidate sports (Squash, Roller Sports, Golf, Karate or Rugby) would be added to the programme of the 2012 Games Damn! It is an amazing achievement and far from failing we should be proud that we won the race, but failed to collect the prize."

Karate and roller sports complete the list, while softball, baseball and modern pentathlon could be excluded. "We have sent a questionnaire to the 28 Summer federations represented in the Olympic Games," an IOC spokesman said. "It is all part of an ongoing review of the programme. As part of this process the IOC has decided to include five sports not currently in the Games." IOC president Jacques Rogge has said that no sport can be included without another dropping out. "We'll decide (about new entries) in 2005. Golf, rugby, squash and roller skating are knocking on the door," Rogge told the Corriere della Sera newspaper. "But for every novelty, we will need to give up a discipline. Nothing can be added. The golden numbers are 300 events, 28 sports, 10,400 athletes at most."

Extractions: Squash offers charms for Olympic place: Jahangir KARACHI: Squash legend Jahangir Khan of Pakistan on Tuesday showed confidence that squash offers more charms than other sports to earn a place in the 2012 Olympic Games. "Squash is played more world-wide and the choice of venues in squash offer more charms than a lot of other sports to earn a place in the 2012 Olympic Games," Jahangir, president of World Squash Federation (WSF) said. "All those cities who are bidding to host the 2012 Games have exciting venues for squash. You can have Olympic squash at the Big Bang or London Bridge if United Kingdom wins the rights," opined Jahangir, who won six world and a record ten British open titles. Squash along with golf, rugby, roller sports and karate vie for a possible place at the 2012 Games if any of the existing 28 Olympic sports is removed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 8. The IOC earlier this month decided that all 28 Olympic sports will face the vote in Singapore in two months time and must win a majority from IOC members to avoid being dropped.
