Research Interests Of Daniel I. Rubenstein By examining the benefits and costs of different patterns of association in a Hack, M., DI Rubenstein (1997) Zebra societies Different Types for http://webscript.princeton.edu/~psych/PsychSite/ns_rubenstein.html
Extractions: My interests focus on animal behavior, especially its evolution and adaptive value. Typically, behavior that enhances an individual's survival or reproductive prospects is favored by natural selection. By using mathematical models and by collecting data from field observations or experiments I search for the general rules that govern how animals make decisions about foraging, fighting and mating strategies. In the laboratory I use fish to identify the rules underlying female choice of males and I use waterstriders, crayfish, spiders and fish to understand why in some competitive situations interactions escalate to dangerous levels involving physical aggression whereas in others they are settled peacefully via conventional display. I am also engaged in a series of experiments exploring the decision-making process individual fish use when joining groups. By varying test group size and distance we can examine how individuals make choices as to which group to join. That some species are more sensitive to small differences in group size, whereas others are not and that response time is longer in some species than others, suggests that perceptual constraints play an important role in decision-making. Coupling the mechanistic (the 'hows') with the functional or evolutionary (the 'whys') aspects of behavior is the only way to gain a complete understanding of behavior in natural settings. Armed with this multilevel understanding, a realistic foundation can then be developed for unraveling the neural bases of behavior. Using simple sensory schemes and behavioral rules I am developing spatially explicit models to explore how animals form social groups and migrate over landscapes of different structure.
What Is Anthropology? They study prehistoric links between different societies, and explores the use and The American Anthropological Association (AAA), founded in 1902, http://www.aaanet.org/anthbroc.htm
Extractions: Go to AAA Home Are you as interested as I am in knowing how, when, and where human life arose, what the first human societies and languages were like, why cultures have evolved along diverse but often remarkably convergent pathways, why distinctions of rank came into being, and how small bands and villages gave way to chiefdoms and chiefdoms to mighty states and empires? Marvin Harris, Our Kind Those words, written by the American anthropologist Marvin Harris, convey some of his fascination with the field of anthropology. But what is anthropology? The word anthropology itself tells the basic storyfrom the Greek anthropos ("human") and logia ("study")it is the study of humankind, from its beginnings millions of years ago to the present day. Nothing human is alien to anthropology. Indeed, of the many disciplines that study our species, Homo sapiens, only anthropology seeks to understand the whole panoramain geographic space and evolutionary timeof human existence.

The Future Of The IALT It may be that there are rival associations (variously described as This iswhat the Society of Legal Scholars does, and there are obvious benefits http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishancestors/Law/IALT/Address.html
Extractions: On 6th April 1979 at Trinity College Dublin the Constitution of the Irish Association was adopted. Thus the IALT is now twenty-five years old, it has an ordinary membership North and South of approximately 90 engaged in law teaching, in addition there are approximately 35 associate members in other organisations and elsewhere. The membership includes a current President of Ireland, and has included a former President of Ireland, a former First Minister of the Northern Executive, and as far as I am aware a current Minister in the Government of South Africa. In addition there are members within the judiciary. However in the past year there has not been one quorate meeting of the Council of the IALT, over the past number of years it has proved difficult to contact officers of the Council at times. As Membership Secretary during the past year I have not performed as well as I should. There was no Mid Year Conference during the course of the past year. Attendance at Conferences in recent years has not been great in my view, in particular only a small number of members of the association attend Conference. Most of the conference participants are those who are giving papers, most papers are given by those who are not members of the association, and very little association business other than conference business is conducted. My first conference was in Galway in 1983 and I have seen a decline in the association since that time. You meet far fewer people who are involved in law teaching or its administration in Ireland at conference now. There are members of this association whom I have never seen at a conference or have not seen at such for a long number of years. It would appear that the IALT has lost its attractiveness to senior people involved in the teaching of the law in Ireland. It may be that there are rival associations (variously described as Societies and Centres) that people are involved in.
Entomology Web Resources It is currently available on the Entomological Society of Canada s Web. The Insect and Spider Collections of the World. 2nd ed. http://www.library.uiuc.edu/bix/biologicalliterature/entomol.htm
Extractions: Entomology is "the study of insects," according to the Oxford Dictionary of Biology, 4th ed, 2000. Strictly speaking, the true insects are only those belonging to the class Insecta, which does not include the spiders and other animals often thought of as insects such as millipedes or ticks. However, this chapter includes material on both insects and their close relatives since many resources treat these related groups together. Applied entomology is largely excluded, although some basic tools are mentioned. Associations American Mosquito Control Association . c/o Pamela Toups, 2200 E. Prien Lake Road, Lake Charles, LA 70601. Founded in 1935, 2,000 members. Web site includes membership information, "Mosquito Links" (primarily links to mosquito control districts and other technical resources), and a nice page with general information on mosquitos and their control. Publishes Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association AMCA Newsletter (available online free from 1998 to date)
Extractions: I have received hundreds of emails concerning SpiderX spiders traps with Dimazinol 7. Most questions ask "Do they work?" , "What is dimazinol 7?", "Why would spiders be attracted to a specific scent?", "Why are they so expensive?" , "Have you tested them?" , "Does the company producing them have any scientific evidence to back their claims?", "Did the company perform any comparative tests?", "Who manufactures Dimazinol 7?", "Is Dimazinol 7 a real chemical, and if it is, what type of chemical is it?". To answer these questions and more, I contacted the makers of SpiderX traps at approximaltely 1:00 PM central time April 9,2004. I explained the need for information on product testing, information on Dimazinol 7, and definitive scientifically scrutinized data on these traps and their efficacy. The conversation lasted approximately 20-30 minutes and all of the information that I requested was passed on to higher authorities within the company. I will keep you posted on all future transactions with spiderX.

Extractions: She Weaves the Web of Life Greece According to Barbara Walker, "classical writers misinterpreted old images of Athene with her spider-totem and web, and constructed the legend of Arachne, a mortal maid whose skill in weaving outshone even that of the Goddess. Therefore Athene turned her into a spider." 1 As another version of the story goes, Arachne, the daughter of a dyer, was an exquisite weaver who challenged the Goddess Athene to a contest, "a presumptuous act, as Athene was the very spirit of the craft itself."2 In her weaving Arachne depicted the entire Greek pantheon in sexual poses and embarrassed the Goddess who, in her fury, ripped up Arachne's clothes in anger. Arachne was so shamed, she hung herself and her spirit scurried away from her body in the form of the first spider. Spiders engender some strange reactions amongst humans, despite the fact that they are almost always harmless (and probably more worried about us plopping them on the head with a rolled newspaper than entertaining thoughts of biting us or crawling on our bare flesh!). In fact Freud went so far as to say that "the capacity of the sight of a spider to precipitate a crisis of neurotic anxiety - whether in the nursery rhyme of Miss Muffet or in the labyrinths of modern life - derives from an unconscious association of the spider with the image of the phallic mother; to which perhaps, should be added the observation that the web, the spiral web, may also contribute to the arachnid's force as a fear-releasing sign." 3

My wife and I own five acres on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In our area there is a large population of whitetail deer with their accompanying parasite, the ubiquitous tick. When we first moved here three years ago our daughter and dog would quite often return to the house with ticks on their bodies. There are several stories in our area concerning severe harm coming to local residents as a result of these tick bites, including Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Erlichiosis. The second year we were here, we purchased a few guinea fowl. Ticks have been very rare in our life since then. Our guineas are range free and sleep where they wish (usually up in the rafters of the goat barn). They get most of their own food in the summer and reproduce on their own. They require practically no care at all. Their only drawback is their alarm call, which they issue quite frequently during the daylight hours. They only screech at night if disturbed and in fact, you may find them more alert than your best watch dog.
