Extractions: Late in 1988 I began to learn the details of a friend's difficulty with the Internal Revenue Service. Some months later this friend and I were married. From that time until the present, her "difficulty with the IRS" has evolved into a dumbfounding series of revelations which have turned my notions of reality utterly upside down. It is said that the truth is stranger than fiction; this is a deception. Most people's truth is, in fact, nothing but fiction at least in varying degrees. It is now late in 1992. After thousands of pages of reading, hundreds of hours of audio and video tapes, astronomical phone bills, and countless hours of personal conversation, it occurs to me that this information carries with it an obligation to share with every person willing to consider it. Therefore, I am trying to create a document which I can give to people I have known over the years, people who know that, inspite of my faults, I simply would not make up something like this. In the hope that you will actually finish this reading, it is more like a telegram (a distress signal, if you will) than a documented textbook. Detail and references will be, of necessity, largely lacking. However, there will be a reading list on the last page which will provide a small sample of the sources with which you may readily search out and verify the statements herein. I sincerely hope that this reading will either shock, dismay, disgust, or anger you enough to cause you to make an honest attempt to prove it wrong.

It is over 20 years since Seligman (1970, 1971) introduced the concept of biological preparedness to explain why fears and phobias are so much more likely with certain stimuli (e.g. snakes, spiders) than others, and a glance at contemporary psychology text books suggests that his theory has stood the test of time. The past ten years, however, have seen a significant increase in our understanding of cognitive biases in the processing of threatening stimuli. This target article will argue that such biases can also explain most of the phenomena traditionally attributed to phylogenetically based predispositions to associate fear-relevant stimuli with aversive outcomes. The paper consists of (i) a description of the phenomena to be explained, (ii) an evaluation of the evidence favouring either biological preparedness or cognitive biases, and (iii) a description of the evaluative processes that might contribute to an information processing explanation.

Extractions: National Summit on Medical Errors and Patient Safety Research Testimony by Saul N. Weingart, MD, for the Harvard Executive Session on Medical Error and Patient Safety The first National Summit on Medical Errors and Patient Safety Research was held on September 11, 2000, in Washington, DC. Sponsored by the Quality Interagency Coordination Task Force (QuIC), the Summits goal was to review the information needs of individuals involved in reducing medical errors and improving patient safety. More importantly, the summit set a coordinated and usable research agenda for the future to answer these identified needs. Individuals were selected by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to testify at the summit as members of the witness panels. Each submitted written statements for the record before the event, documenting key issues that they confront with regard to patient safety as well as questions to be researched. Other applicants were invited to submit written statements. The Executive Session Observations Research Questions Thank you for the opportunity to testify on behalf of the Harvard Executive Session on Medical Error and Patient Safety. Those of you here today need no reminder of the extent of medical error in America and of the collective burden that patients bear. As a practicing internist, I've seen more than my share of preventable injuries. And like all clinicians, I am haunted by the fear that I could accidentally bring harm to those who trust me to keep them well.

This is one occasion where members can gathered together for a social event. We do hope that this could be eventually upgraded to an Annual Dinner and Dance in the years to come. Coming back to this real world. With the advancement of technology, everybody is talking about virtual office. If this is the trend, we do not really need a physical secretariat. So why not a virtual secretariat for the Society. Maybe with the launching of the Web today, the Society could now be on its way to a virtual secretariat. We would require more spiders to man the Web then just our Dr Poh Kim Leng. If you have surfed the Society's Web site, you would agree with me that it is no easy task. All volunteer spiders can approach Dr Poh direct. With this, we welcome all of you to this Members' Nite and hope you enjoy this occasion."

The full text of the paper can be read at www.mspp.net] Truth never dies, but it leads a wretched life. The subject of homosexuality has been a significant subject of interest and conflict in most cultures throughout history. In the last few years it has been a subject of conflictual interest in the scientific community; especially those fields involved in psychotherapy and counseling. Whenever science is attacked on ideological grounds, its integrity and usefulness are threatened. Science has served society well in tackling some of the worlds greatest problems, but only as long as it has evaded capture by narrow-minded interests (Leshner,2003). In the late 1960s the gay community began a more intensive assertive program, which continues into the present. Episodically it had belligerent qualities. One of its most effective maneuvers was to threaten litigation against the American Psychiatric Association for declaring homosexuality a perversion. There was enough controversy in the field of psychology and medicine about that issue that it became possible (according to legal counsel) that in a court of law the American Psychiatric Association would be vulnerable to a significant financial loss. Since there was no evidence that homosexuals could be "cured," the committee that wrote the
