The Federation's ID explored and studied at least 100 important caves, and members of the HMU and the PAN nature club founded the Hellenic speleology Association in 1950. http://www.sportsnet.gr/3/30h/30h1/e30h16.html
Extractions: On the 12th of September 1927, at the top of mount Olympus, twenty four Greek, French and Swiss climbers agreed the foundation of the Hellenic Mountaineering Union. From this informal mountaineering union known as the "Cuckoos", came the Mountaineering Union of Athens on 7th March 1928 and then that of Patras on 27th June 1928. On 20th February 1930, these two unions founded the Hellenic Mountaineering Union (H.M.U.) that functions as a Federation for the mountaineering clubs that continue to be created throughout Greece. Its network of activities expanded and thanks to the increasing popularity of mountaineering and skiing in Greece, reflected in the creation of Mountaineering groups and H.M.U. units in 60 cities today, as opposed to the 43 in existence in 1940, the authorities recognised the H.M.U. as a national Federation representing the country at sporting events such as the Winter Olympics, and various seminars. The H.M.U. joined the relevant International Federations such as the International Skiing Federation (F.I.S.) on 14th February 1936, the International Union of Mountaineering Associations on 29th August 1936 and more recently on 1st January 1985, the European Union of Mountain Trekking, while from 1953 onwards, it has played an active role at the meetings of Councils and Committees of these Organisations. In parallel with mountaineering and skiing the H.M.U. became involved with speleology. Since 1932 it has explored and studied at least 100 important caves, and members of the H.M.U. and the "PAN" nature club founded the Hellenic Speleology Association in 1950. Another of its causes is the protection of the environment and nature in mountains. Since 1937 it has played a leading role in pushing through the environmental legislation and in creating two national parks (Olympus and Parnassos in 1938). It became a member of the International Union for the Protection of Nature (I.U.C.N.) on 23rd October 1950, and thanks to the efforts of its members it contributed to the creation of the Hellenic Association for the Protection of Nature.
