Undergraduate Adapted PE Adapted PE Teacher Certification Track Today in the United States, it is estimated that 95 percent of school-aged students are being provided physical education instruction in some type of general physical education environment. These students include persons with disabilities. There is a clear need to prepare general physical educators to provide the appropriate services to all students. Texas Womans University is the only University in the state of Texas that prepares physical education majors with these specialized competencies to take the Adapted Physical Education National Exam. This certification allows physical educators the right to call themselves Certified Adapted Physical Educators (CAPE). In addition, these students graduate with a second teaching field in special education. Most of the graduates of this program will teach and/or coach in the public schools. The average starting salary, depending on the school district is estimated between $28,000 to $30,000 for a 10month period. During the summer many physical educators work at summer sports camps, teach summer school, or take graduate courses. This program provides a unique opportunity for physical educators to make themselves more employable and more capable to meet the needs of all children.

This year, incentives lost, and failing grades, the only option to graduate if he failed the HSCT was with a special diploma. One course and one teacher with a strict reputation stood in his way. Bootcamp Estella is a first year teacher of students with learning disabilities at an inner-city elementary school. Being a white female in a predominately African American school, the principal openly acknowledges that he was forced to hire her but would have preferred to hire an African American male teacher. Unfortunately, none had applied. Feeling unwanted and unsupported by the administration, she struggled to deal with a difficult and aggressive student and his mother. Anyone who is concerned about a student's progress in school may start the process. Teachers typically consult with each other and try different interventions to help a struggling student. The Teacher Assistance Team keeps a record of the applied interventions, duration of the intervention, and the results. When the team determines that further attempts at interventions would be repetitious or impractical in nature, it makes a referral to the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) by contacting the principal or chairperson.

What is the referral process for Special Education? The School Wide Assistance Team (SWAT) meets on each campus to consider the individual needs of students. In addition to special education, the SWAT considers referrals for supportive counseling, crisis intervention, Talented and Gifted, English as a Second Language, Americans with Disabilities Act eligibility and accommodations.
