No plaques, no crosses, no mounds. Just 2.5 acres of forlorn bogland surmounted by a spruce knoll. The site isn't even a true island but a spit of land jutting into Halifax Harbor's Northwest Arm. But in this unhallowed ground, forgotten by the country that sent them off to fight, lie the bodies of 188 American sailors and soldiers taken prisoner by British regulars and Canadian colonial forces during the War of 1812 ''No doubt their loved ones wept, but they seem to have vanished from the memory of the US,'' said Guy MacLean, a leader of the Northwest Arm Heritage Association and one of the Halifax residents whose recent fight to save Deadman's Island from development ended up pricking the conscience of American veterans groups and, finally, the US government. ''What started as a very local controversy over this land became a history lesson that reverberated on both sides of the border,'' MacLean said.

Although the Havana night was moonless, the Maine 's gleaming white hull longer than a football field contrasted against the blackness of the sea and sky. Smoke wisped from its two mustard-colored funnels. Random lights sparkled from its portholes and its bridge. In the captain's cabin, Charles Sigsbee sat at a table writing a letter to his wife. The trouble in Cuba, he wrote, would soon be over. The new Spanish governor of the island seemed to have the situation under control. During the three weeks that the Maine had been in Havana, Captain Sigsbee had seen no sign of Cuban rebels. He'd entertained the Spanish officers in his mess, and he and his staff had been entertained lavishly by the local officials. Although Sigsbee found the bullfights to which he'd been invited somewhat barbaric, the Spanish officers behaved as perfect gentlemen.

Extractions: I n its "Record of Current Events" column in May of 1898, the American Review of Reviews published a photograph of Theodore Roosevelt with a brief caption saying that he had been commissioned a lieutentant-colonel of cavalry volunteers. The photo (at right) is interesting as one of the last distributed through the press before his image was transformed during and after the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt's fame as a leader of the Rough Riders dominated post-war portrayals, and his April 10, 1899, speech on "The Strenuous Life" seemed to solidify the change in his image. His advocacy of imperialism, war, and the strenuous life were combined in images published after the Spanish-American War. Whether he was shown making a charge up Capitol Hill or engaging in hand-to-hand combat with grizzly bears in Colorado, Theodore Roosevelt was the conquering hero. In the pre-dawn darkness of the 28th of June of 1898 an American warship, the U.S.S. Yossemite , lay in wait off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Although commissioned as a cruiser, she was not originally built for battle. Until recently, she was El Sud, a 6,000-ton cargo ship owned by the Morgan Steamship Company and converted from freighter to fighter, at the outset of the Spanish American War. Three-inch thick steel plates were mounted athwart her engines and a ten-foot berm of coal formed a dubious barrier of protection around her boilers. A pair of five-inch, guns were placed on her forward and aft decks. Her other armaments included a set of three six-pounders on both the port and starboard decks and another set of three rapid-fire cannons in hull ports on the broadsides, below. In all, she carried sixteen guns and to complete her vestment as a warship she was painted "fighting gray". The U.S.S. Yossemite

Extractions: THE DETROIT HISTORICAL MUSEUM THE DOSSIN GREAT LAKES MUSEUM HISTORIC FORT WAYNE THE DETROIT HISTORICAL SOCIETY Historic Fort Wayne In 1840, at the point on the Detroit River closest to British Canada, the United States Army began surveying local farms for the placement of new artillery post. The five-point star fort was slated to have the most up to date cannons capable of firing on the Canadian shore as well as ships sailing the river. This new fort was DetroitÂ’s third, but the first built by the Americans. In 1701, shortly after Cadillac landed, the French began building Fort Detroit, which was surrendered to the British in 1760 after the French and Indian War. The British built a new fort several years later and named it Lernoult, which they occupied until 1796 when the United stated took over Detroit and renamed the battlement Fort Shelby. Following the War of 1812, Fort Shelby fell into disrepair while the threat of a territorial war still loomed with British Canada. As tensions increased along the Northern border following the Canadian Patriot Rebellion, the United States began planning a substantial border defense that included new forts from the east coast to the Minnesota territory. The Detroit fort, constructed in 1845, would be named for General 'Mad Anthony' Wayne whose defeat of the British at Fallen Timbers in 1796 resulted in the United States occupation of the Northwest Territories. Diplomacy intervened, however, in the mission of Fort Wayne. Before any cannons were even procured for the new fort, the United States signed a treaty with Britain that called for diplomatic solutions to territorial disputes. The new Fort was recomissioned as an infantry garrison, but did not see any troops until the Civil War when the first Michigan soldiers reported for duty.
