Extractions: Associated Press 10:50 AM Sep. 25, 2000 PT WASHINGTON A group of large email marketing companies proposed a detailed set of privacy standards Monday, hoping the measures will amount to a sort of "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" for Internet direct advertisers. The Responsible Electronic Communications Alliance, which includes DoubleClick, 24/7 Media, Bigfoot Interactive and ClickAction Inc., says the standards will cut down on the number of unwanted emails, or spam, that Internet users receive. Special Partner Promotion Find local technology jobs A survey conducted last year by the Gartner Group research firm found that 91 percent of email users receive spam at least once a week, and most of them favor either regulating spam or banning it altogether.

Spam One of the most hotly-contested issues in the realm of law and technology, spam is viewed variously as a privacy-invading barrage of junk, a resource drain, and a legitimate method of reaching consumers. Generally defined as unsolicited, bulk, commercial mail, spam isn't a problem with tidy solutions. Drawing a line between spam and non-spam, or, more importantly, deciding who gets to draw that line, is a tricky problem that invariably implicates free speech. Fundamentally, EFF believes that email recipients should control when and how they receive their mail. To the greatest extent possible, anti-spam measures should be controlled by end users, and any measure for stopping spam must ensure that all non-spam messages reach their intended recipients. When antispam measures prevent activists and nonprofits from sending and receiving bulk noncommercial mail, EFF considers this a problem commensurate with the problem of spam itself. Another problem arises when antispam measures sacrifice a citizen's ability to engage in anonymous free speech, which the Supreme Court has ruled countless times is protected under the First Amendment. Extractions: Security At Home Published: February 10, 2005 Just when you thought it was safe to go back into your Inbox, there's a new form of spam e-mail on the horizon. This spam is more than just unwanted and annoying. It could lead to the theft of your credit card numbers, passwords, account information, or other personal data. Read on to find out more about this new identity theft scam and to learn how to help protect your privacy. Top of page A phishing scam sent by e-mail may start with con artists who send millions of e-mail messages that appear to come from popular Web sites or sites that you trust, like your bank or credit card company. The e-mail messages, pop-up windows, and the Web sites they link to appear official enough that they deceive many people into believing that they are legitimate. Unsuspecting people too often respond to these requests for their credit card numbers, passwords, account information, or other personal data. Top of page What does a phishing scam look like?

Internet and Law By Kieren McCarthy Published Tuesday 7th November 2000 21:18Â GMT Stumbling ISP PSINet has owned up to a contract with a sender of bulk unsolicited commercial email - known to you and me as spam. It has long been a suspicion that some ISPs have had illicit contracts with spammers, despite a publicly stated policy against such practices. However, after news site CNet obtained an unsigned copy of a contract between PSINet and spammer Cajunnet, both companies were forced to admit their co-operation. Of course, there's a catchy term for all this: a "pink contract". Being caught red-handed comes as a big embarrassment to PissyNet, which hasn't exactly been in the top 50 growth IT companies recently. Cajunnet was, as you would expect, entirely unrepentant - if perhaps a little annoyed that it would have to find another ISP after having been kicked off by several others for producing too many complaint emails.
