This was the conveyed by the US Ambassador, Dr David C. Mulford, and also in the Prime Minister's message read out at the inaugural session of the Indo-US space summit here. In what he termed "giving each other space", Dr Mulford said: "Now we are actively seeking to re-energise our co-operation (in space). This will require sustained leadership on both sides, as well as the support of our private sectors and our scientific communities. We all want to increase high-tech co-operation and commerce between the US and India."

Extractions: Home Industry Projects Surveillance / Patrol Aircraft ABL YAL 1A The US Air Force Airborne Laser, (ABL), designated YAL-1A, is a high energy laser weapon system for the destruction of tactical theatre ballistic missiles, which is carried on a modified Boeing 747-400F freighter aircraft. The ABL is being developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory and Team ABL, comprising Boeing, TRW (now Northrop Grumman Space Technologies) and Lockheed Martin. Boeing is responsible for program management, systems integration, battle management system and modification of the 747-400F aircraft. TRW Inc is building the laser systems. Lockheed Martin Space Systems is responsible for the target acquisition and beam control systems. The US Missile Defense Agency (previously called the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization) is responsible for the management of the program and it is executed by the USAF from Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1996, the Department of Defense awarded Team ABL a $1.1 billion Program Definition and Risk Reduction (PDRR) contract for the development and test of an Airborne Laser weapon system. During tests at TRW's Capistrano Test Site in 1998, the laser demonstration module achieved a power level 10% higher than the requirement. In April 2000 the ABL final critical design review was completed. Modification of the aircraft, involving installation of the turret in the aircraft's nose and modifications to accept the laser, optics and computer hardware, was completed in May 2002. In July 2002, the modified aircraft took the first of a series of test flights. After receiving airworthiness certification, the aircraft was flown to Edwards Air Force Base, California, in December 2002, for the installation of systems. The aircraft returned to airworthiness flight testing in December 2004 following installation of the beam control / fire control system. In May 2005 the aircraft will be fitted with the two illuminator lasers. In November 2004 all six modules of the COIL laser were successfully fired for the first time. The COIL laser is to be installed in late 2005. The first prototype is scheduled for completion in 2006. A second system is being considered for 2008.

But having physical space attached to the sandbox, is critical to the core concept of enhancing the technology dialog on campus. As joint projects are identified, at some point locating the hardware for these projects becomes an issue. Physical space is required to house equipment and to provide a working environment where campus technologists can have direct access to the equipment. Physical space encourages the technology dialog between groups by providing a common area to meet, brainstorm, interact, work on problems together. It also gives vendors visibility and a broader relationship with the UCLA community. The sandbox will occupy approx. 1300 square feet on the fourth floor of the Math Sciences building ( see the detailed directions ). It is directly adjacent to the existing machine room space (approx. 7000 square feet, shared with AIS). Larger systems being tested in the sandbox may require the enhanced environmental capabilities of the machine room. These systems can be located there, with easy access from the sandbox.

There is a cleanroom belonging to the laboratory - Ångström Microstructure Laboratory (MSL). The cleanroom has a surface of 2000 m , of which 150 m has the classification 100. The group consists of a number of researchers, PhD student as well as engineers and is managed by PhD Johan Köhler. ÅSTC focus on two domains: to develop basic Micro/Nano Technology (MNT) for space applications and to administrate and execute the Ångström Nano Satellite program. The Swedish Space Corporation and the European Space Agency (ESA) are examples of partners and sponsors. The ÅSTC is currently reorganizing in order to include local industries (NanoSpace AB, Ångström Aerospace Corporation, Kalogi AB, etc) and complimentary research groups within the University (e.g. Space Physics, the MicroStructure Laboratory, etc). The new organization will be settled by 1 January, 2006.
