Extractions: Completed Phase II on left Construction of a new addition to the research center (Phase II) began in August 2002 and is now complete. Phase II of the facility was ready for occupancy at the end of December, 2003, adding another 52,000 square feet of laboratory space to the existing 71,000 square feet of Phase I. The new space will house between 12 and 14 investigator-led teams of researchers who will conduct clinically relevant basic science studies in priority areas of pediatric research, including developmental biology, disease pathogenesis, neurobiology, genetics, and child health. In addition to the 55 new benches in the laboratory, Phase II also adds three medium sized conference rooms, shared procedure and cold rooms and increased equipment space for large shared use items. A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the completion of Phase II is scheduled for January 26, 2004, at which time our generous family of supporters will be invited to tour this state-of-the-art facility.

Extractions: Program Overview The Space Explorers Program connects local, under-represented minority students with the university research community. By immersing these middle and high school students in the process of doing science, we hope to increase their interests and abilities in science and math and help them to succeed in high school and beyond. Graduates of the Space Explorers matriculate in college as science majors at a rate that is 500% better than is predicted by combined national and Chicago Public Schools statistics. The Space Explorers Program offers a multi-year, multidimensional commitment from the members of the Institute. Students participate in weekly hands-on, in-depth laboratory sessions residential science institutes at Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, visits to research labs, and enrichment field trips. Occasionally older students are placed as interns in research laboratories. Perhaps more important than the science content that these experiences offer are the relationships with Institute researchers that develop, and the thought processes the students see modeled. Our partner, the Office of Special Programs, recruits students via their deep connections to the community and the public schools. Participants are selected based on interest and commitment rather than abilities.

Our oldest field of research is concerned with the magnetic field of the Earth, which we have been measuring since 1844. Our first measurements are among the earliest ever measured. Measurements are conducted today at Nurmijärvi Geophysical Observatory and many other observation points. Today a new challenge for the research of solar-terrestrial physics is to support the attempts to predict space weather. Space weather concerns how the dynamic space environment, influenced by conditions on the Sun, can have hazardous effects on technical and biological systems, both in space and on ground. FMI has a crucial role especially in the establishment of European space weather activities.

In this a prime mover with regard to academic ties was Robert Jastrow, a physicist who had come to NASA from the Naval Research Laboratory in November 1958. An imaginative theorist, Jastrow over his years with NASA interested himself in atmospheric and magnetospheric physics, meteorology and atmospheric predictability, the origin of the moon and planets, and astrophysics and cosmology. He was a superb speaker, able to hold both lay audiences and professional colleagues spellbound with his descriptions of space science topics, an ability that served NASA well when Jastrow appeared before congressional committees in defense of the agency's space science budget request. He produced numerous books and articles of both technical and popular level. On television he was a frequent exponent of the many benefits mankind was receiving from the space program.
