Extractions: USDA Grant to Help Kansas Kids MANHATTAN, Kan. - A five-year, $750,000 New Communities Project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expected to help communities in three Kansas counties develop pilot programs to encourage teens to increase physical activity and reduce obesity in their community. Kansas is one of five states awarded funding, said Elaine Johannes, Kansas State University Research and Extension youth development specialist with Extensions Community Health Institute and 4-H. Johannes teamed with Carol Fink, an associate 4-H youth development specialist who also has responsibilities with the USDA Family Nutrition Program, to write the New Communities Project proposal to develop teen leaders who can direct physical activity lifestyle efforts. The renewable grant, which integrates nutrition and health, youth and community development, will provide $150,000 for each of five years to underwrite the development of teen led physical activity programs in Ellsworth, Meade and Morris Counties. Counties selected to participate in the community youth development effort represent a geographical cross section of the state, Johannes said. Each also has a large percentage of rural communities that often are underserved when it comes to healthy lifestyle programs addressing obesity.

Community Food Security Coalition - Programs The following states have nutrition Network programs Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania. Georgia, Missouri, south dakota. Indiana, Nevada, Vermont http://www.foodsecurity.org/farm_to_school.html
Extractions: For More Information Farm to School Projects - Is There a Need? Children nation-wide are experiencing an epidemic of obesity. In schools, physical education programs have been cut, while the presence of high caloric junk foods has increased. School districts, hungry for cash for extra-curricular programs, have signed "pouring" contracts with soft drink corporations, giving them the ability to both sell and promote their products on campus. In an increasing number of schools, the food service department is contracting out lunch to fast food chains such as McDonalds, Domino's or Taco Bell. None of this bodes well for the health and nutritional needs of school children. Farm to School programs work to counteract these negative trends by incorporating healthy, nutritious, produce into school lunches, snacks and salad bars. Anyone who has picked a tomato right off the vine knows that a great tasting tomato is synonymous with freshness. We want kids to know that fresh produce tastes great! When combined with nutrition education, farm visits, school gardens, and education in the classroom, children can develop healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. In doing so, they can decrease the risk of experiencing food related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

[ Read More Even if South Dakota enacted all the protections in the Patients Bill of Rights, 300,000 people in South Dakota cannot be assured they have the comprehensive patient protections recommended by the Presidents Advisory Commission. This is because the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) may preempt state-enacted protections. That is why the President has called on Congress to pass a federally enforceable patients bill of rights so that everyone enrolled in managed care may have a basic set of protections. Notably, 150,000 South Dakota women are in ERISA health plans and are therefore not necessarily protected. Women are particularly vulnerable without these protections because they are greater users of health care services, they make three-quarters of the health care decisions for their families, and they have specific health care needs addressed by a patients bill of rights. ...
