In Pennsylvania, a latest Keystone Poll shows US Senator Arlen Specter (R) still in a competitive re-nomination fight against conservative Congressman Pat Toomey (R). Specter holds a 50% to 28% lead among registered GOP voters, but the race narrows to a 46%-33% contest when only likely GOP primary voters are polled. Meanwhile, a new University of Cincinnati/Ohio Poll shows US Senator George Voinovich (R) comfortably leading State Senator Eric Fingerhut (D) by a 54% to 38% vote. In South Dakota, US Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D) got some bad news yesterday when newspaper publisher and Native American activist Tim Giago announced he will oppose Daschle as an Independent. Giago had been planning to run against Daschle in the primary as a Dem. With Daschle locked in a tight contest against former Congressman John Thune (R), most votes Giago draws are likely to come at the expense of Daschle.

Extractions: S.423, entitled Health Care Parity for Legal Transportation, was authored by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Russ Feingold (D-WI). The measure would prohibit insurers from denying health care benefits to insureds who are injured while participating in so-called "risky activities" such as riding motorcycles, ATVs, horseback riding, snowmobiling, skiing or other legal recreational or transportation activities. Congress had passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) back in 1996, which prohibits companies from denying access to employer-sponsored health insurance for motorcyclists and others, but federal regulators created a loophole that allows insurers to deny benefits to those injured as a result of their participation in certain activities. In other words, your employer is required to provide you with health care insurance, but your health insurance company is not required to provide medical benefits!

Extractions: news from abroad All foreign news stories welcome ( streetbiker@mag-uk.org ) particularly from FEMA member countries. South Dakota Congressman Bill Janklow has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in the deadly crash that claimed the life of 55-year-old Minnesota motorcyclist Randolph Scott. The accident occurred when the legislator ran a stop sign at a rural intersection near Sioux Falls on August 16. Police investigators determined that Rep. Janklow's Cadillac proceeded through the intersection at a speed estimated to have been between 70-75 mph in the 55 mph zone, and continued into the path of Scott's Harley-Davidson without stopping, giving the rider no chance to avoid the fatal collision. Janklow, 63, has a long history of speeding, and his driving exploits have been near legendary in his home state during his many years of public service. At one point during his 30-year political career, the four-term governor racked up 12 speeding tickets in four years. Janklow served as attorney general from 1974-78 before being elected to four terms as governor, from 1979-1986 and 1995-2002, and was elected to the state's lone House seat last year. During his tenure as governor, the pugnacious Republican was credited with elevating the Sturgis rally into a tourist attraction, and in 2001 he was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame.

Extractions: The briefing chart, once stamped "SECRET" but now turning yellow in a NASA archive, shows a smooth curve with the names of nine test pilots plotted according to their weights. At the lower end, between 150 and 175 pounds, are Bob Walker, Scott Crossfield, Neil Armstrong, and Robert Rushworth. Sloping from there up to 200 pounds, straining the limit of how much human payload an Atlas rocket could lift into space, are Bill Bridgeman, Alvin White, Iven Kincheloe, Bob White, and Jack McKay. The top of the chart reads "CREWMAN AVAILABILITY." It was presented on June 25, 1958-eight months after Sputnik and four months before the birth of NASA-to Air Force officials making hurried plans to put a "Man In Space Soonest," as the secret project was called. On this particular summer day, to this particular briefer, these nine guys seemed most likely to become the first people in orbit. Other names that might just as well have been included but weren't: David Simons, Joe Kittinger, Clifton McClure, maybe even Airman 1st Class Donald Farrell. All had done experiments in preparation for spaceflight in the late 1950s, and all had reason to believe, if only for a while, that they might take mankind's first leap off the home planet. As it was, MISS never flew, and only Neil Armstrong went on to become what we now think of as an astronaut. But in 1958 the question of who-or even what type of who-would be the first spaceman was far from settled.
