Extractions: The hallmark of GIS development in South Dakota has been cooperation and collaboration among many parties. State GIS users realized early on that a state as physically large as South Dakota, with such a small population, presented problems that could only be solved by working together. The result has been a close working relationship between Federal, state, regional, tribal and local governments, as well as private entities. In addition to the projects mentioned above, several projects involving collaboration between South Dakota state government and outside entities: K-12 GIS Education Initiative: SD View: a group currently headed by Mary ONeill of SDSU, which is an affiliate of AmericaView, the national group working to expand remote sensing education through a network of numerous state consortia. SDView held an initial meeting in September 2002 and has received a grant from AmericaView to promote the use of remotely sensed data in South Dakota. Tribal Data Initiative: the Geospatial Academic Inter-Tribal Initiative is a multi-disciplinary research center within the South Dakota State University College of Engineering, complementing atmospheric, environmental, and water resource management concerns on tribal lands. Negotiated tribal governmental and academic partnerships are fostered across Indian Country for scientific dialogue among other tribal and non-tribal academic researchers and governmental agencies communicating by means of spatial and remotely sensed data.

Their school leaders understand the value of technology skills for their students and see that students are in the computer lab using computers every day. The school library currently has eight computers, and all classrooms have at least one computer, although some are quite old. Scriver assists Colman-Egan staff with computer questions when tech assistance is not available, and helps staff locate Internet resources for their classroom projects. She also works with students on Internet research, creates school banners, and writes thank you notes for the school board. She leads international student education tours and hosts exchange students. This year, her students are planning an 11-day trip to Europe and Scandinavia. They meet regularly to plan their trip on the Internet; researching culture, maps, transportation and events. Hospitals and clinics are not just health care providers - they are major employers and contributors to the overall quality of life.
