History I Print Preview of Section South Dakota , state in the north-central United States. South Dakota is generally regarded as partly but not wholly in the Midwest. The east, with its flat or rolling lands and fertile soils, resembles portions of other states in the Midwest. However, the western section lies on the Great Plains . The state is mainly an agricultural region. Farmland covers much of the fertile areas east of the Missouri River , which divides the state, and vast stretches of rangeland extend westward from its banks. Manufacturing and commercial activities are based in large part on the output of agricultural produce.

Extractions: This project provides a fundamental building block for The National Map : multi-State data. The compelling achievement stitches together different geospatial data residing on servers in Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri. The data are from different sources, based upon different schemas, but will be styled in such a way that information will appear as though its all one source. The achievement will eliminate a common barrier found in many approaches in solving geographic problems where the data ends at the State borders. Scientists and researchers in Missouri and Arkansas will be able to use geographic data together to study water quality in the famed White River watershed. The same could be said for economic and business developers in southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri exploring ways to spark rural economies using geographic information from both sides of the State line. Previous The National Map Partnership Projects have approached other technical challenges in implementing The National Map . This pilot however, is the first of its kind to involve statewide geographic databases from three different States. While the effort is a major technical challenge, it could not have been accomplished without the strong bond between geographic administrators and decisionmakers in these States. Each of the three States are active participants in a multi-State consortium known as the

Extractions: The following document is extracted from Fire Insurance Maps in the Library of Congress: A checklist compiled by the Reference and Bibliography Section, Geography and Map Division. The Preface contains general information on LC's collection and includes a list of other libraries with Sanborn holdings. The Introduction by Walter W. Ristow give an excellent historical perspective on fire insurance maps and the Sanborn Company. Sample image from Preface The Earth Sciences and Map Library has a microfilmed set of the California Sanborn maps from this collection. Please see our online index for complete holdings information. Tracing the development and growth of cities and towns has been a popular study in recent years. Fortunately for the researcher on such a quest, the cartographic collections of the Library of Congress contain thousands of maps and atlases of urban areas, dating from as far back as the sixteenth century up to the present. Of particular note among the Library's holdings is an extensive collection of maps of American cities and towns, giving detailed, accurate information about their buildings and other structures. The Sanborn Map Company of Pelham, New York, produced many such maps. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large-scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present and depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape, and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls, locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show the locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are thus an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American cities.

South Dakota is a big, wild, wide open place that cries out for detailed maps. And, the South Dakota Atlas & Gazetteer has maps that are worthy of the land. In addition to the famous DeLorme backroad detail, the maps show all but the tiniest lakes and streams. For hunters, we identify both waterfowl and game production areas. There is also a wealth of information on fishing, canoe trips, scenic drives, touring and mountain biking, unique natural features and attractions. In honor of the state's earliest inhabitants, there is a special section on South Dakota's tribal lands. And, we've indexed the Atlas by geographic features (lakes, creeks, canyons, ridges, etc.), to make it easy to find just about any location in the state. The scale is 1:200,000 (1" to 3.2 miles). A mosaic of the maps would measure approximately 10 feet wide by 7 feet high. SIZE: 11 x 15.5 INCHES.

Extractions: June 2000 NEW CHIEF th nd CATALOGING During the year, work has continued on the revision of Cartographic Materials: A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2 . In January, Elizabeth Mangan presented a set of rule revision proposals to the MAGERT Cataloging and Classification Committee and, with the committees approval, to the ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA). The majority of the requests were approved and forwarded for consideration by the Joint Steering Committee for AACR. Ms. Mangan attended the Joint Steering Committees meeting last March in San Diego to present the revision package for consideration. A second and hopefully, final package of rule revision proposals was prepared for presentation to the Committee and to CC:DA at the ALA conference. PHILLIPS SOCIETY The Philip Lee Phillips Society held its 4 th annual meeting and dinner in early April in Pasadena in conjunction with the California Map Society. This meeting was a tremendous success for both the Phillips Society and the California Map Society, since more than 150 individuals participated, which is more than twice the normal 60 or so who routinely attend the California Map Society meetings. Planning has already begun for the Spring 2001 meeting at the Library of Congress on the theme of Latin American mapping, which will be co-sponsored with the Huntington Society of the Librarys Hispanic Division. The Ambassador of Peru has offered to host a reception at his residence on the occasion of the meeting and the Texas Map Society has invited the Phillips Society to meet with them October 2002 in Arlington, Texas.
