Children who have a variety of special food and nutrition needs exist in every school district. Studies have shown that most school nutrition managers have at least one child in their school with special needs. The medical conditions reported most frequently include food allergies, diabetes, and a variety of disorders that require modifications to the texture of food. Federal regulations require school nutrition professionals to modify meals for a child with a medical authorization that his or her diet is restricted by a disability. Providing special meals need not be a costly undertaking for school nutrition services. This issue of NFSMI Insight presents recommendations for managing nutrition services for children with special food and nutrition needs These recommendations focus on administrative processes that can reduce labor and food costs.

Sioux Valley Energy - Operation Round Up Sioux Vocational School, Furniture and furnishings for disabled people special Olympics south dakota, special Olympics and Ambassador program http://www.siouxvalleyenergy.com/operationroundup.html
Extractions: Sioux Valley Energy , headquartered at Colman, South Dakota, initiated the nonprofit Sioux Valley Energy Customers' Trust program in the fall of 2000. The purpose of the trust is to acquire, accumulate and disburse funds for charitable and educational purposes as permitted by Section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Your community, your school, and/or your nonprofit organization may be eligible for funding. The region served by the Trust is primarily the electrical area served by Sioux Valley Energy , but it also includes the adjacent non-serviced neighborhoods as well. The electrical service area includes Rock and Pipestone Counties in Minnesota, and Brookings, Kingsbury, Lake, Moody, and Minnehaha Counties in South Dakota. Funding for the Trust comes mainly form the Cooperative's customers who agree to participate in the nationally know Operation Roundup program. The concept is rather simple. Each month when electric bills are prepared, statements are rounded up to the nearest whole dollar. The difference between the billing and the actual cost of the consumed electricity for the month is placed into the Trust Fund. The most any one customer could possibly contribute in a year's time is $11.88 ($0.99 times 12 months).

Extractions: Another Court's Point of View By Peggy A. Burns, Esq. G enerally, transportation must be provided to students with disabilities only to the same extent it is provided to students without disabilities. But if transportation is a related service for a particular disabled child, the school district must provide that transportation regardless of the level of services provided to other students. In Malehorn v. Hill City School District , the U.S. District Court in South Dakota has asked and answered the question, "When is transportation a related service?" The context for the court's decision is an interesting and recurring fact situation: what is the effect of the student's move from another district? Prior to moving to Hill City, South Dakota, Laura Beth Malehorn was receiving door-to-door transportation pursuant to her Individualized Education Program (IEP). After her move, the Superintendent of the Hill City School District said that the district did not have any special transportation, and that, therefore, that portion of her IEP would not be implemented. Instead, Mrs. Malehorn had to drive Laura Beth to a school bus stop approximately 8.5 miles from home, where a school bus transported the children the last five miles to school.

Extractions: Table of Contents Conclusions We learned from this SERA study that while the turf wars continue, funds shrink, and leaders depart, state departments of education, school districts, and schools are sticking with SMT reform. In terms of educating a diverse population in SMT, educators are devising strategies that they think fit the needs of their students and their available resources. Many of these strategies are based on educational equity research that has been summarized in print and electronic toolkits. These toolkits have been developed by federal and state education offices and centers as well as other educational organizations and offices. The following lessons learned from the SERA study may offer some guidance for other educators who are trying to figure out how to infuse equity into systemic reform initiatives. Take the time to ensure that new assessments are aligned with content standards and are sensitive and appropriate for diverse student populations. Many state departments of education and school districts are in the process of developing or identifying assessments that align with their content standards. Given concerns about using only fair, non-biased tests, districts need to take the time to ensure that new assessments and the administration of these assessments are appropriate for diverse student populations. Particularly with performance-based assessment, test developers need to be concerned about:

Extractions: Sharon, MA 02067 USA Suzanne Gervais Peyton It has been 25 years since the Massachusetts Special Education Law, commonly known as Chapter 766 (M.G.L.c.71B) was implemented. This landmark legislation impacted our public school system in the 1974-75 school year. This served as the leading model for the federal law enacted several years later, and Massachusetts paved the way in treating children who have disabilities with dignity, bringing them out in the light, out of institutions, and providing them access to education. The road has not been easy and there is more work to be done as we blaze new trails into the 21 st Century.
