These regions are cultural units rather than governmental units formed by history and geography and shaped by the economics, literature and folkways that all the parts of a region share. What makes one region different from another? A region's multicultural heritage as well as distinct demographic characteristics like age and occupation make regions different and special. Within several regions, language is used differently and there are strong dialects. There are also differences in outlook and attitude based on geography. New England New England - including Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Wellesley, Smith, Williams, Amherst, and Wesleyan - is unequaled by any other region. America's first college, Harvard, was founded at Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1636. Without, however, large expanses of rich farmland or a mild climate, generations of exasperated New England farmers declared that the chief product of their land was stones. By 1750, many settlers had turned from farming to other pursuits. In their business dealings, New Englanders gained a reputation for hard work, shrewdness, thrift, and ingenuity.

The elevations of features and distances between points in the United States were determined from surveys and topographic maps of the U.S. Geological Survey or obtained from other sources. In most cases, the elevations were determined from surveys and from 1:24,000- and 1:25,000-scale, 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle maps. In Alaska, information was taken from 1:63,360-scale, 15-minute topographic quadrangle maps. In a few cases, data were obtained from older, 1:62,500-scale, 15-minute maps; these maps have been replaced with larger scale 7.5-minute coverage. Extractions: The Big Sioux River enters Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from the north and meanders through the core of the city before exiting on the northeast. One of the issues the City of Sioux Falls faces on a daily basis is its relationship with water, specifically measures to control the river when there is too much water or precautions to implement when there is too little. Numerous flood precautionary measures are already in place including a diversion channel, dikes, and other flood management controls. In addition, the City of Sioux Falls relies on the Big Sioux River for a large portion of its water supply. This past summer, many water supply restriction measures were implemented to ensure an adequate supply and to lessen reliance on groundwater. The GIS employees of the City of Sioux Falls have the task of explaining complex problems or issues to decision makers and appointed officials. This task is made easier with the use of modern technologies that use GIS. The City of Sioux Falls utilizes ESRI's ArcInfo 8.x and extensions, which enables it to create products that are used to educate. Examples include hard-copy maps that feature digital elevation models, aerial photographs, or satellite imagery; three-dimensional visuals that are captured on a computer and projected onto a screen for a large audience; and vector data that represents storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water distribution, just to name a few.
