Extractions: South Carolina Newspapers by Ron Allman Georgetown Times The Georgetown Times lays claim to being the oldest weekly newspaper in South Carolina because of its ties to the Georgetown Gazette, which was first published with the financial support of wealthy plantation owners May 8, 1798 by John Burd and a Mr. Elliott. The American Press Century Club of New York certified on April 15, 1934 that the Georgetown Times was established in 1797 and was enrolled as a member of that organization. Another newspaper, the Georgetown Comet, founded in 1874 by Moses L. Dorrill, editor, and E. H. Williams, editors and publishers, merged with the Horry News, which was founded in 1869 by T.W. Beatty, editor, and S.R. Rhodes, publisher. The two newspapers merged in 1877 with the Georgetown Times to become the Comet and News. Tarbox, Dorrill and Williams may have retained an interest in the newspaper. The newspaper changed names again in 1878 to become the Times and Comet, a Democratic newspaper with Doar as editor. Two other Doars, probably Josiah Doar's sons, J. Benjamin Doar and Russell Doar, were also associated with the paper.
