Extractions: The University Francis Marion University, founded in 1970, is one of South Carolina's 12 state-supported universities. As one of the state's six comprehensive institutions, FMU prides itself on providing a strong liberal arts education. Named for Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the "Swamp Fox" for using the South Carolina terrain to out-fox the British, the University enrolls nearly 4,000 students. The University offers a broad range of undergraduate degrees and a select number of graduate programs in serving the needs of communities, businesses and industries of the Pee Dee region. FMU has the look and feel of a small, liberal arts college with all the benefits of a state-supported comprehensive university. FMU offers an excellent learning environment, small enough to afford students personalized attention from faculty and staff, and large enough to let students expand their horizons. While 93 percent of its students come from South Carolina, the University enrolls students from 32 states and 34 foreign countries, allowing the FMU community to experience the diversity of people from other cultures. The student-faculty ratio is 16 to 1, and the overall class size is 20. The average age of undergraduates is 22, while the average age of graduate students is 36.

Extractions: Early Years Are Learning Years Research and Reports Supporting Teachers, Strengthening Families Links to National Organizations Child care and preschool programs have difficulty attracting and keeping good individuals to work with young children. A third of program staff leave the field each year, primarily due to the lack of adequate compensation-low salaries, few benefits, and difficult working conditions. Research has clearly shown that the skill and commitment of the adults in early childhood programs directly affects the quality of care and education given to children. Below are some resources to help advocates and policy makers to improve the compensation of the early childhood workforce, and thus the quality of services for children and families. This area of our web site is a work in progress. Examples of other compensation initiatives and new resources are welcomed and can be sent to pubaff@naeyc.org

Extractions: The Bridge strives to ensure that every adolescent who has experienced difficulties related to alcohol and/or other drug use receives an equal opportunity to achieve successful functioning in the community through a comprehensive support network. Program Description Recognizing that the family is the primary support system for an adolescent, the program provides outpatient family-member, family-unit and multi-family counseling, as well as home-based support services and other opportunities to enhance healthy life skills. The program's flexible "wrap-around" approach to services (e.g., health care, tutoring, family and individual counseling) is designed to stop the "twin revolving doors" of inpatient treatment and juvenile incarceration that often trap today's adolescents. Its philosophy allows program goals to be modified and adapted to fit the needs of all adolescents and families to increase their likelihood of adapting and functioning successfully in the community. The success of The Bridge has led to the establishment of new services for adolescents in South Carolina. Specifically, the state now offers juvenile drug courts and residential treatment programs for adolescents who are involved with the juvenile justice system and who have problems with alcohol and/or other drugs. Program Goals The ultimate goal of The Bridge is to improve treatment outcomes for adolescents who are experiencing diagnosable alcohol and other drug problems and who are preparing to leave - or are in danger of entering - a structured, residential treatment setting.
