HOC Plenary Session Debut in Athens By Thodoris Georgantas Greek male and female athletes will make their debut in six out of 28 sports included in the Athens Olympic Games program in August 2004. Never before in the Olympic Games history has a Greek athlete took part in the volleyball, in handball and in other sports less popular in Greece, such as baseball, softball, hockey and badminton. In August 2004 in Athens, Greek athletes will compete in sports most of the Greeks are not familiar with, as well as in sports, like volley ball and handball, Greek athletes are proud of great distinctions. But there are also sports where Greece has never been represented at the Olympics. VOLLEYBALL The President of Greece's Volley Ball Federation (EOPE) and Hellenic Olympic Committee's (HOC) treasurer Thanassis Beligratis was very clear about the participation of national volleyball teams of men and women in the Athens Olympic Games. "We won't participate in the Games just to parade", he said. "The program of our national volleyball teams' preparation for the 2004 was set up when our country won the Olympic Games organization. We have been working on that and I hope that our teams will manage to star both in the volleyball and in the beach volleyball". Greece's national men's team won a bronze medal at a European championship, while they took the sixth place, the best they had ever achieved, at the World Championship which took place in Athens in 1994. In the beach volleyball, Greece can be proud of a gold medal at a European championship. It is worth mentioning that volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo, while beach volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games program in 1996 in Atlanta. Greece has already a participation in two Games.

Archives Americans lose softball World Cup 03:47 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 19, 2005 Associated Press The Americans lost a tournament title game for the first time since 1997, falling 3-1 to Japan on Monday night in the championship of the inaugural World Cup of Softball. The Americans, who won the gold medal at three straight Olympics, hadn't lost a title game since the 1997 Superball in Ohio, 1-0 to Australia. It was also the second loss in a week for the U.S. team. The Americans dropped a 2-1 decision to Canada in their tournament opener, their first loss in international play since dropping a 6-1 decision to Japan at the U.S. Cup on July 4, 2002. The U.S. losses come more than a week after the International Olympic Committee voted to eliminate softball from the 2012 London Games because it lacked global appeal.

It was really good to go out and root for them.

Hunt decided Lewis, who had not practiced with the team, would not run.

News Print Email Last Updated: Sunday, August 22, 2004. 8:06pm (AEST) China have been eliminated from a chance at a medal in Olympic softball, as Reika Utsugi drove in the game-winning run in extra innings to give Japan a 1-0 win in their semi-final. It was the second-straight time that China-born Utsugi, who has become a Japanese citizen, has driven in the winning run to defeat the team from the land she once called home. The two teams were scoreless through the regulation seven innings and went to a tie-break system where each team starts with a runner on second when they come up to bat. Japanese pitcher Yukiko Ueno's run of perfection ended in the fourth inning when Zhou Yi tapped a soft fly that landed gently behind third base for a hit. Ueno, who went the distance in the win, had pitched the first perfect game in Olympic history two days before against China. She retired the first 10 batters she faced on Sunday.

Extractions: From a tiff between Yale and Harvard rivals involving a stick and a boxing glove, softball, now played by some 20 million people worldwide but confined to women at the Olympic Games, has come a long way. The tiff, between a Yale graduate celebrating a football victory and a rival from defeated Harvard, took place at the Farragout Boating Club in Chicago. Yale man threw glove, Harvard man hit it with stick and so a sport was born as an indoor alternative to baseball in the late part of the 19th century. The Second World War helped to spread the game as soldiers brought it from the US but the sport found its greatest following among women. Australia held its first women's interstate championship in 1947 and Melbourne staged the first world championship in 1965, when the hosts beat the US 1-0.

Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY Softball had its Olympic debut in Atlanta, 1996, where, to the surprise of few, the US emerged winners. It is not for nothing that the type of softball played at the Olympics is known as fast-pitch softball. The fastest pitch thrown in Atlanta was clocked at 118kph, though most elite pitchers come in at a little over 100kph. Until 1995, the US had notched up a 109-game winning streak. Before the Games in Atlanta, the US was beaten by China, but Australia was the only team to beat the US during the Games. China then beat Australia for the silver behind the US. In Sydney, Tanya Harding leads a tough Australia squad that could challenge for the title with the US, Japan and China.
