Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. The United States Olympic softball team will take on a group of college all stars at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex on Friday, June 18 in a single game to be played at 8 p.m. The tour is in the second of two phases leading up to the Athens Games. The Olympic team participated in various high-profile tournaments against college teams and now is in the grassroots portion of the tour, making stops in 22 cities across the country, including Salem. The U.S. team is currently 36-0 on the tour continuing a 150-game win streak in pre-Olympic tour history. The team has two more games before playing in Salem Friday night. On its current tour, the U.S. has outscored opponents 329-10 and the pitching staff has an ERA of 0.27. "This is an exciting opportunity to see America's team in action prior to its defense of its two Olympic gold medals," said Ron Radigonda, ASA executive director. "We have raised the bar on the competition we will face on this tour and that should prepare us for what we will face in Athens."
