Israel PUTNAM on June 17, 1775. When Americans learned that the British in Boston intended to secure certain heights outside the city, General Artemas Ward ordered the fortification of Bunker Hill on the Charlestown peninsula. Inexplicably, his subordinates instead took position on nearby Breed's Hill. The British soon launched an attack up the slope. In several hours of bloody fighting the Americans were dislodged, but only after the British lost 228 dead and 826 wounded. Attention is focused on the expectations of students and teachers with regard to instructional and learning approaches and methods. Questions relating to student support and supervision and extracurricular activities are also broached. Lastly, this chapter discusses teaching resources (instructional materials, libraries and new information and communication technologies), teacher training and educational research. Before addressing the methods most likely to encourage learning, many participants recalled the importance of the teacher-student relationship . This is a human relationship, and one that should be significant for the student, since it forms the cornerstone of any good instructional approach. Some people felt the teacher-student relationship should be a genuine, caring one, on the grounds that students learn better from teachers they like. Others thought it should be modelled on the master-apprentice relationship, while a third group took the view that the relationship requires a commitment by both partners to the joint task of constructing knowledge. The students expressed clear expectations in this respect. They want a calm climate and cheerful, patient teachers who let them make mistakes and give them a second chance, who listen without being overbearing, who make small, positive gestures of encouragement, and who are understanding, respectful and demanding. They want better communication and a chance to sit down with their teachers to discuss problem issues.
