Extractions: Yellowstone is a national treasure which is owned by the American public. Protecting Yellowstone is the responsibility of the American public. This weekly feature will help identify and explore the issues which are crucial to the ongoing, healthy existence of the "Crown Jewel" of America's National Park system. YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK (YNET) A coalition of environmental groups called the Bluewater Network filed a petition last week with the National Park Service to ban snowmobiles from National Parks. They also called for safety and pollution restrictions on snowmobiles used elsewhere. At the present, snowmobiles are allowed in 28 national parks, although Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Voyageurs (Minnesota) National Parks represent the majority of snowmobile use in the National Park system. It is certainly true that there are pros and cons when it comes to snowmobile usage in Yellowstone and Grand Teton, but an outright ban of snowmobiles in these Parks is not the answer. Snowmobiles allow visitors to experience the wonders of Yellowstone in the winter months, an opportunity which should not be taken away.
