With the exception of Napoleon's 4-year tutelage of parts of Slovenia and Croatiathe "Illyrian Provinces"Slovenia was part of the Habsburg Empire from the 14th century until 1918. Nevertheless, Slovenia resisted Germanizing influences and retained its unique Slavic language and culture. As a young independent republic, Slovenia pursued economic stabilization and further political openness, while emphasizing its Western outlook and central European heritage. Today, with a growing regional profile, a participant in the SFOR deployment in Bosnia and the KFOR deployment in Kosovo, and a charter World Trade Organization (WTO) member, Slovenia plays a role on the world stage quite out of proportion to its small size.

Link HISTORY Geology of the Slovenian territory was first studied by the geologists of the Austrian Geological Survey. The Geological Survey for Slovenia was founded within the frame of the Ministry for Industry and Mining on May 7, 1946. As a result of decentralization of economy, it was placed under the administration of the Energy and Extractive Industry Council of the People's Republic of Slovenia in 1950, and was later in the same year renamed to the Administration for Geological Investigations of the People's Republic of Slovenia. At the beginning, there were only five geologists in Slovenia, who were all employed at the University. In 1952, first students of geology graduated and were employed at the geological survey. The Administration for Geological Investigations of the People's Republic of Slovenia was united with the Drilling Company into the Geological Survey of the Peoples Republic of Slovenija in Ljubljana in 1952. In the same year the institution assumed residence at Parmova 33 in Ljubljana. The Geological Survey of the Peoples Republic of Slovenia in Ljubljana was proclaimed a financially independent institution and renamed to Geological Survey Ljubljana in 1954. As a financially independent institution, the Geological Survey Ljubljana had to comply with the requirements of the market, which resulted in rapid increase of the number of employees. It had grown from 4 in 1947 to 347 in 1959, and to nearly 3.000 in 1980. The extent of working spaces in different locations had grown simultaneously with the number of employees.

Extractions: The history of go in Slovenia is connected with the history of go on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. In the following article we shall deal with events concerning go in Slovenia. The history of go in Slovenia can be found also in Ranka Yearbook 10, so in the following article we shall enlarge with the events occurring in the last decade. First we would like to mention the go club in Pula (now a part of Croatia, at that time the main Austro-Hungarian naval base), where go was played from the year 1900 to the end of the First World War. In that club, in the year 1914, the young Slovenian naval officer Ervin Fink learned how to play go. Much later, in 1960, he wrote a series of articles about go in a Slovenian weekly newspaper. In the year 1961 he published the first go book in the Slovenian language - Go igra (The Game of Go). In 1969 Go zveza Slovenije (Slovenian Go Association) organised the 13th European Championship in Ljubljana. Next year, Slovenian go players visited USA, participating in an international tournament in New York, and playing matches with teams of go clubs in New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Boston.

Further examination proves it to be worthwhile, however, because it yields a plethora of insights and facts that would be very hard to find without it. Admittedly, some of the data reported are by now dated. Most of the compilation seems to have ended by 1997 or 1998. That may well be caused by the dilatoriness of the publisher, which is certainly at fault for the unattractive format of the volume, with its small, crowded pages and tiny print. The publisher may also be responsible for the lack of an introduction or a forward that might help to set the book in place in the reader's mind.

Extractions: THE NUMISMATIC CABINET It is the only and thus central institution of its type in Slovenia. Since the establishment of the museum, the department has systematically collected, preserved and scientifically studied numismatic and other material significant for monetary history, coinage and banking on Slovenian territory. The systematically acquired collection consists of about 80,000 items (coins, banknotes, medals), under the supervision of a specialized curator since 1948. The Cabinet has been an independent department of the museum since 1964. In addition to perfecting and supplementing the already existing collection, one of the tasks of the cabinet is to document all classical and mediaeval coins found in Slovenia, to provide professional appraisal of the above and, not least, to study them. The rich material in the collections illustrates in detail the history of coinage on the territory of present-day Slovenia, and thus indirectly also the history of the area in general. The material from the collections and the results of its study are presented to the public in the form of occasional exhibitions as well as numerous publications. The Numismatic Cabinet is forming a central computer register of the coin finds of all periods found on Slovenian territory and a register of all the numismatic material in Slovenian museum institutions. In order to further this project, the staff of the Numismatic Cabinet developed the computer program NUMIZ NUMIZ - the computer program Current projects:

It had emerged from of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia formed in 1945. The Slovenian nation has had a long and remarkable history. Contributions of some Slovenians are given in www.uvi.si/10years/contribution/ Slovenia was the first democracy of Europe as documented already in 611AD, known as Caranthania, part of which is in present day Austria. The system was studied by political theorists. The leader's stone throne of the day still stands in the original place in Austria. It is regarded as significant in the development of Western democracy, and referred to in the writings of Thomas Jefferson's American Declaration of Independence. The Slovenian nation became a feudal state after 745AD and was ruled by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy until 1918. In 1918 it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
