The Willy Bietak production ( http://www.bietakproductions.com/ ) has now evolved into a first rate entertainment vehicle. The show has been marketed to local theater organizations and has most often been a part of an annual subscription package of theatrical presentations. From November through February, it will appear in ten venues; others have indicated interest in presenting it in the future. Much has been added to the show as it moved into several theaters across the U.S. in late 2004 and 2005. Sara Kawahara directs and choreographs. The numbers and transitions are more crisp, the sound system is much superior, and the guest skaters and singers are better integrated into the show. The stage settings are attractive, yet unobtrusive and easily moved and adjusted. The program credits Jef Billings as Costume Designer, and the ensemble skaters definitely sparkle more than in Branson! Interestingly, Rudy and Oksana brought their own costumes (except for one of Rudys). Unlike Branson where there wasn't any printed information about the show, there are now Playbill style and souvenir programs with complete performance listings and skater biographies. Rudy, Oksana, and Leslie Uggams, the guest singer for several of the shows, had full page glossy inserts in the souvenirs.

Fairbanks Sr. and second wife Mary Pickford were Hollywood royalty and an invitation to their home, Pickfair, was a guarantee that one had "arrived" socially in town. The couple were cool to Joan at first, but months after Joan and Doug Jr.'s marriage in June 1929, an invitation to Pickfair was finally forthcoming (after Britain's Lord Mountbatten specifically requested a meeting with Joan). While 1929 saw Joan busy trying on her more serious and subdued personality (less gum-chewing, fewer bows on her shoes and clothes, more reading of the books Doug recommended), there was also a seismic change afoot in the film industry: the advent of talking pictures. While the Talkies proved problematic for some non-English-speaking stars and those (such as Clara Bow and John Gilbert) whose voices didn't match their screen personas, Joan's sultry voice and looks were a perfect fit; she made the transition to sound easily and remained a fan favorite. MGM featured her in a song-and-dance number in their star-studded sound showcase

Extractions: Home Discussion Forum Discography Media ... Webmaster Burt Bacharach The son of nationally syndicated columnist Bert Bacharach, Burt Freeman Bacharach was born in Kansas City, Mo., on May 12, 1928. In 1932, Bacharach's family moved to Kew Gardens in Queens, New York. At his mother's insistance, he studied cello, drums and then piano beginning at the age of 12. As a youth, Burt hated taking piano lessons. His dream was to play professional football, but his size, or lack thereof, kept him out of that field. As a teenager, Bacharach fell in love with jazz and sometimes used a fake ID to sneek into 52nd Street nightclubs to see bebop legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Bebop's unconventional harmonies and melodies were a major influence on the young composer. When he was 15, Bacharach started a 10-piece band with high school classmates. With Burt on piano, the group gained exposure playing parties and dances. After graduating from Forest Hills High School, Bacharach enrolled in the music studies program at McGill University in Montreal. It was there that Burt says he wrote his first song, "The Night Plane to Heaven." Bacharach went on to study theory and composition at the Mannes School of Music in New York City; at the Berkshire Music Center; and at the New School for Social Research, where he studied under composers Bohuslav Martinu, Henry Cowell and Darius Milhaud (whose influence on Bacharach's style is apparent in his work). He was also awarded a scholarship to the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Extractions: by P. A. Todzia Here is a biography of Oksana that I have compiled. It is not an original work of scholarship or journalism. Damn! I just wasn't able to interview her! So it is only as good as my sources, which I will list at the end of part two. If any one knows of any good sources that I've missed, be kind, don't criticize, let me know; or post it here for all. Oksana Bayul, or Baiul was born in Dnepropetrovsk in central Ukraine S. S. R. on Nov. 26, 1977. (Europeans render her name the first way, and Americans use the second spelling. The difference results from transcription from the Cyrillic alphabet. A paperwork error had her birthday listed as Feb. 26, 1977 before her world title.) Her first fourteen years were filled with tragedy and heart-break. Her father abandoned the family when Oksana was only two. Her mother died of Ovarian cancer at age 36 in 1991. After the funeral, Oksana went onto the ice. "She was just out there gliding and crying, crying and gliding," her first coach reported. Her grandmother died in 1992. Through all the turmoil, she kept on skating. As a child Oksana dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer; not an unusual dream for a girl in the country that was home to the Bolshoi and Baryshnikov. However, the story goes, that Oksana was a chubby girl, not at all like the quintessential, svelte ballerina. Her grandfather got the idea that skating would be good exercise to trim her down, and he got her first pair of skates.

Now 10 years old and a student at The College School on the UD campus, Pipkin represented the University of Delaware at the recent U.S. Junior Figure Skating Nationals in Jamestown, N.Y. Extractions: Biography Viktor Petrenko was born in Odessa in the Soviet Union on June 27, 1969. He was the first child of Tamara and Vassily. Their second son, Vladimir, was born one and a half year later. As Viktor was a sickly child, the doctor advised the Petrenkos to introduce him to some kind of sport to make him healthier. At that time a new ice rink had been built in the town of Odessa and at that place Viktor started skating at the age of 5. The other favorite sport of his youth was soccer, which he played on the streets with his friends. Viktor was 10 years old when he was discovered by Galina Zmievskaya who was still an unknown coach at the relatively new training facility. During the following years she and Valentin Nikolaev became a coaching team that instructed not only Viktor but also Viktor's brother Vladimir and Viacheslav Zagorodniuk. At the age of 11 Viktor mastered his first triple jump. He won the Junior World Championships at the end of 1983 and earned a place in the Soviet Union's senior National team for the next season. Although he was still very young he had already developed some characteristic movements such as the layback spin or the beautiful landing of his jumps with rounded arms and upturned palms. His jumps continued to improve, he landed his first triple axel in competition at Skate America 1985. In 1988 the skating world was introduced to a new Viktor Petrenko. Though he was still on the threshold between boy and man his skating showed a new maturity and self confidence. His powerful presence on the ice combined with beautiful jumps enabled him to win the bronze medal at the Calgary Olympics. It was a surprising success for Viktor and Galina, who kissed and hugged each other in the Kiss and cry even more emotionally than usual.
