Extractions: Jenni Meno and Todd Sand started skating at the ages of 8 and 10 respectively. Jenni had a successful singles career, making it to the national championships. In the summer of 1990, her coach convinced her to try pairs skating. She moved from her hometown of Westlake, Ohio to California to train with legendary pairs coach, John Nicks. Her skating partner was to be Scott Wendland. Todd Sand also had a successful singles career. With his dual citizenship, he was the Danish National Champion until he decided to become a pairs skater and skate for America. He also trained with John Nicks, and his partner was Natasha Kuchiki. When Jenni arrived in California, Scott Wendland was unable to pick her up at the airport and sent Todd in his place. There was an instant attraction, but it would be two years before the two would begin dating. In the meantime, Meno and Wendland's partnership was successful. The team made it to the '92 Olympics in Albertville, France. Kuchiki and Sand's partnership flourished as well, with that team earning a national title, a world bronze medal and a spot on the '92 Olympic team. During the Olympics, Jenni and Todd spent a lot of time together, and their friendship blossomed into romance. The two also realized that they had similar skating goals and desires. They began to think about the possibility of switching partners to become a pair.

Lawrence and Raleigh bicycles. -The London Mail on Sunday This is the story of two ice dancers from Nottingham. They're so smooth, so elegant that together they've picked up their sport, shaken it vigorously and changed it all around. One skater is named Jayne Torvill, the other, Christopher Dean. He's an ex-rookie cop, and she's a former insurance clerk; he has dimples, she hasn't. They started out with different partners, but when they teamed up in 1975, something magic happened. Magic. It's still happening. The most vivid proof of that came last March 12 in the ice-dancing competition at the 1983 world figure skating championships in Helsinki. At the conclusion of Torvill and Dean's free-dance program, the scoreboard first flashed a row of nine 5.9 scores - out of a possible 6.0 - for technical merit; then it lit up with a display of nine 6.0s for artistic impression, something that had never before occurred in any form of figure skating. Those scores, of course, gave them the 1983 world title, their third in a row. Since then, Torvill and Dean have continued to grow and build, deliberately weaving mystery around everything they do, opening a gap on the rest of the ice dancing field that assuredly won't close before they turn pro early next year. If there was ever a gut-sure bet, it's that Torvill and Dean will win the gold medal at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in February, and then knock off still another championship at the world meet in Ottawa a month later. He enjoyed the process more than the result and was saddened to see his third and probably final Olympics approaching. As for Oksana, it would be her first Olympics. She was still only 22 years old at this point, and approached the season with attack. Many in the skating world had commented on the transformation that took place for the young woman. The confident, strong competitor who had appeared at CSF and Worlds was a far cry from the shaky new partner who had debuted with Artur back at Skate America 1995. It was clear that Oksana, in a very brief period of time, had brought herself up to Artur's level. She said she owed the change not only to herself, but to her partner and coach, as well as to her parents and husband for supporting her. During the off season, Oksana noted during an interview that she and her husband enjoyed going to the ballet along with Artur and his family. But any vacation time was brief; the pair continued to work hard in preparation for the following season.

The following Junior Worlds (1991) which took place in December 1990, Anissina and Averbukh dropped to fourth, whereas Morel and Peizerat claimed the silver medal. After leaving their coach to train with Natalya Linichuk, Marina and Ilya regained their Junior World title in Hull the following season. But despite the promising future, the Soviet team soon split up as Ilya Averbukh left Marina in order to skate with a fellow ice dancer, Irina Lobacheva, with whom he had fallen in love and later married. The two skaters are very different. Gwendal once likened Marina to fire while she likened him to water. "They are two very different characters," describes their coach Murielle. "She is very explosive. He is so calm, more thoughtful. He always knows what he wants to do. Marina is more instinctive and Gwendal more cerebral. She is quick tempered but with a big heart."
