Born in 1949, John Curry was a dance enthusiast from an early age: he had wanted to take ballet classes when he was five years old, but his father refused. Instead, John took up skating, at which he excelled. Numerous competition wins followed, satisfying his father that skating qualified as a competitive sport. When he was 16 his father died and John moved to London. He began training full-time and also started taking the previously forbidden ballet classes. Already, he was formulating his life's mission: to form an ice dance company, bring ballet-standard dance to the skating world and reveal the possibilities of the rink to the ballet world. John wanted to make a name for himself in international figure skating, but two obstacles stood in his way: one technical and one stylistic. Technically, John's performance suffered as he competed at higher levels: after a flawless practice, nervousness would lead to slips in front of the judges. And stylistically, John was at odds with the British figure skating community. His vision of ice dance and his years as a ballet enthusiast had helped him to develop his own fluid, expressive style. This was seen as acceptable in a child skater, but less appropriate for a young man: 'I was actually told not to be so graceful,' he later recalled.

Rudy Galindo's "Studio 54," skated at "Ice Wars" and televised on CBS, November 27, 1999, is the most disliked skating program in U.S. cyberspace this season. With few exceptions, public reaction has been negative, to the extent that according to News on the official Rudy Galindo website , the program has been retired. What does this program actually look like? Set to a high-energy medley of familiar disco tunes from the "Studio 54" soundtrack, it was intended as a "fun" rather than "technical" number, designed to get the audience to participate by clapping along. Many of the sampled songs have been staples in gay dance clubs. The program started out with a triple toe-triple toe combination, a triple salchow, and a single axel (it should have been a double, but Galindo's efforts to re-train a triple axel appear to have affected his timing on axel jumps). The rest of the program mainly consisted of Galindo dancing on skates, showing that unlike some skaters who attempt, less convincingly, to skate club dance-like programs he really does go out dancing in real life. At one point, Galindo wiggled his butt for the camera; at another point, he (briefly) framed his crotch with his hands. He paused by the boards to sprinkle glitter on some spectators. His dancing was adept and also undeniably sexual, in an irony-tinged fashion that is typical of gay men on the "flamer" end of the butch-femme spectrum. Of the spectators visible on TV, some appeared to "get it" with enjoyment; others looked distinctly uncomfortable.

Unseen Skaters - Aanya Reiten Biography Reiten skated both ice dance and freestyle (ladies singles), and after splitting Ice dance, though, has played a big role in her skating to this day. http://www.geocities.com/unseenskate/biography/reitenaanya.html
Extractions: Status: Junior Ladies Aanya Reiten was born on September 19th, 1986 in the city of Pueblo, CO. Reiten began skating at the age of nine, inspired by the 1995 National Championships, which she watched on television. In May of that year, she and her father went skating every Sunday during the public session at the Lakewood Winter Club, in her home town of Spanaway, Washington. Reiten fell in love with the sport, and decided to take private lessons, with the very coach she still trains under today. Reiten has such love for skating that she delivers newspapers to help pay for her training. Over the past four years, she has delivered over 600 papers. Reiten skated both ice dance and freestyle (ladies singles), and after splitting with her partner after Junior Nationals, she decided to focus all her skating on freestyle. Ice dance, though, has played a big role in her skating to this day. It has helped her learn better flow on the ice, deep edging, and fully expressing herself on the ice. Her skating team includes her long-time coach Kelly Clark, and Becci Safai, her choreographer. Reiten especially admires the skating of Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen, and Jamie Silverstein. The person who has had the biggest impact on her skating is Kim Underwood. After she stops skating, Reiten hopes to still be active in the figure skating world. In the mean time, she enjoys swimming and being active in her church.
A House Is Not A Homepage: Burt Bacharach Bio While serving as a danceband arranger with the Army in Germany, Bacharach met The special featured world-class skaters including Brian Boitano, http://www.bacharachonline.com/bacharach_bio.html
Extractions: Home Discussion Forum Discography Media ... Webmaster Burt Bacharach The son of nationally syndicated columnist Bert Bacharach, Burt Freeman Bacharach was born in Kansas City, Mo., on May 12, 1928. In 1932, Bacharach's family moved to Kew Gardens in Queens, New York. At his mother's insistance, he studied cello, drums and then piano beginning at the age of 12. As a youth, Burt hated taking piano lessons. His dream was to play professional football, but his size, or lack thereof, kept him out of that field. As a teenager, Bacharach fell in love with jazz and sometimes used a fake ID to sneek into 52nd Street nightclubs to see bebop legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Bebop's unconventional harmonies and melodies were a major influence on the young composer. When he was 15, Bacharach started a 10-piece band with high school classmates. With Burt on piano, the group gained exposure playing parties and dances. After graduating from Forest Hills High School, Bacharach enrolled in the music studies program at McGill University in Montreal. It was there that Burt says he wrote his first song, "The Night Plane to Heaven." Bacharach went on to study theory and composition at the Mannes School of Music in New York City; at the Berkshire Music Center; and at the New School for Social Research, where he studied under composers Bohuslav Martinu, Henry Cowell and Darius Milhaud (whose influence on Bacharach's style is apparent in his work). He was also awarded a scholarship to the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Biography Biography. Born August 17, 1957, in Bristol, England, Robin Cousins began He is a successful choreographer for other skaters and for major ice shows, http://members.aol.com/loisy/cousins/bio.htm
Extractions: Born August 17, 1957, in Bristol, England, Robin Cousins began skating at age nine. A natural skater, he rapidly advanced under his first coach, the late Pam Davies, to make the British international team at the age of 15. He distinguished himself with his exceptionally high jumps, fast and varied spins performed in both directions, and musicality, and his dance training showed in the clean lines accentuated by his six foot height. Already a crowd favorite, by the 1976 season Robin was establishing his technical and artistic reputations on the international scene. His Olympic long program included five triple jumps, the most done by any skater in the competition. Shortly before that, freshly recovered from knee cartilage surgery, he had nearly upset John Curry in the British Nationals, winning both the short and long programs against what was one of John Curry's weakest performances just prior to John's stunning sweep of the 1976 European, Olympic, and World titles. Robin's first major medal, a bronze at Europeans, came in 1977, followed by his second knee cartilage operation after a painful withdrawal midway through the long program in '77 Worlds. That year also marked his move from working with the late Gladys Hogg in London to training with the late Carlo Fassi and his wife Christa in Denver. From the fall of '77 on, he was undefeated in the free skating (short and long programs combined) for the remainder of his amateur career, and scored at least 15 perfect 6.0s in various events, mostly for artistic impression. Poor placements in the school figures that made up 30% of the competition limited his overall titles. The first of his three World Free Skating Championships came in 1978, but he narrowly missed the overall World title in one of the closest contests in history. In 1980, he finally broke through to the top, winning the Olympic and European Championships. He capped his amateur career with one of his best performances, and 3 more 6.0s, for a final free skating title and an overall silver medal at the World Championships in Dortmund.
