World Civilizations Encyclopedia of North American Indians American Indian nations of the Great Plains spoke so many different languages that vocal communication between them was difficult. As extensive trade networks developed and political alliances became necessary, an elegant language of the hands developed that cut across spoken language barriers. This language became known as Indian Sign Language or, more accurately, Plains Sign Language. Details of the origin of Plains Sign Language are unknown, but historical records show that when Spanish explorers in Coronado's expedition entered the southern plains in 1541-42, they encountered Indians who were using signs. Captain William Clark, who carried out extensive field research in the 1870s and used the sign language fluently, was of the opinion that, whatever its origin, the language had particularly flourished during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, along with many other aspects of Plains cultures, as horse nomadism arrived and the permanent population of the plains increased. Clark learned the sign language from Indian scouts of the Pawnee, Shoshone, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Crow, and Sioux Nations, who were employed by the U.S. Army in 1876-77 and who conversed with each other entirely in signs. Garrick Mallery, a former army officer turned ethnologist, collected evidence that showed that despite many regional variations in signed vocabulary in the nineteenth century, such dialect differences did not prevent skilled sign talkers from understanding each other across the whole plains area. Extractions: in New Zealand Sign Language by Rachel Locker McKee and David McKee Personal names in any culture are a potential gold mine of information about social relationships, identity, history, and linguistic processes. In Deaf communities around the world, members are commonly referred to by sign names given to them by other Deaf people at various stages of life, which are different from the legal (spoken language) names given by parents at birth. The study of name signs provides a window on the relationship between sign language, social interaction, and identity, in this case within the New Zealand Deaf community. Because they are bestowed by other Deaf peers through a period of close acquaintance, name signs both signal and construct a persons identity as a recognized member of a Deaf community, which is often regarded by members as an extended family (Monaghan 1996, 463). The acquisition of a name sign may mark a persons entry to a signing community, and its use reinforces the bond of shared group history and alternative language use (in relation to mainstream society). Thus, using name signs is a linguistically efficient means of personal reference and is culturally important for interactions in a signing community because social networks tend to hinge on connections with other Deaf people rather than ones family of origin (unless the family is also Deaf). Personal identity in the Deaf community is strongly shaped by (and reflected in) language use and by ones relationships with peersinformation that is encapsulated in a small way in name signs. Because people in the NZ Deaf community often have several name signs (which are used either at different periods of their life or alternately within different social groups or audiences), their use is somewhat context dependent.

With his deep brown eyes, floppy ears and cheerful disposition, he was my constant companion throughout my teen-age years. We would play together in the garden, and take long walks over the hills behind tile house and on the beach. Benji would hang on my every word with his head tilted to one side. Despite being a dog, he seemed to have a sympathy for my problems that went deeper than words could express. He was my best friend. Benji left us about 15 years ago for that great kennel in the sky. But recently I've been thinking about him a lot. Was he really conscious? Could any animal have consciousness like we do? Does it matter whether animals are conscious or not? For many, it is a matter of life and death. On the one hand, animal research has helped prevent some of the most pressing human diseases, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, "mad cow" disease, malaria, cystic fibrosis and emphysema. On the other hand, this research is performed largely on chimps, our closest nonhuman relatives, with whom we share 98.4% of our genetic material, and on the other great apes, with whom we are similarly biologically close. Some people feel this connection is strong enough to warrant special treatment. An international group called the Great Ape Project is pushing the government of New Zealand to adopt a bill that would give some human rights to chimpanzees, gorillas and the rest of the great apes. The Great Ape Project is lobbying the United Nations to adopt a declaration on the rights of great apes modeled on the UN declaration On the Rights of Man. The group believes that apes are "conscious" and so deserve legal protection of their right to life and freedom from imprisonment and torture.

The Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) is a multi-purpose performing arts complex located in Nashville, Tennessee. TPAC houses some of Nashville's finest entertainment including The Broadway Series, The Tennessee Repertory Theatre, and the Nashville Symphony, Opera, and Ballet. TPAC consists of three spaces: Jackson Hall, Polk Theater, and Johnson Theater. Tennessee Repertory Theatre (The Rep) is a professional (Equity) theater company that offers a varied season of musicals and plays. Extractions: Taiwanese Sign Language The Taiwanese Sign Language (TWL) includes 50 fundamental postures. A gesture in TWL consists of one or more postures sequentially moved or posed to some position or direction. For example, "Father" in TWL is gesticulated as making the posture numbered one, which means one, to the cheek and then making the posture numbered twenty-six, which means "male". Each gesture can be thought as a vocabulary in a lexicon, and a sentence is a sequence of gestures. Moreover, there are two styles of gesture in TWL: natural sign language and grammatical sign language. Natural style is mostly used by the disabled, especially the elder generation. Its order of sequence of vocabularies may be different from that of Chinese. The grammatical style is taught in the elementary school and is consistent with the order of word sequence of Chinese. Because of the consistency and regulrity, we tentatively only take grammatical style into account in our research. Detail description can be found in my paper and my proposal
