Extractions: Founding of Freetown, Sierra Leone When the American Revolution began, there were about 500,000 slaves in the American colonies, and British officials sought to win their allegiance through suggestions that a Loyalist victory would mean an end to slavery. Thousands of slaves joined the British cause in the remaining years of the revolution and contributed to the Loyalist war effort as soldiers, guides, foragers, cooks, laundresses, teamsters, and construction workers. In fact, very few Loyalist endeavours lacked the presence of at least some Blacks. British gratitude was not always apparent, and many Black Loyalists were treated as slaves or bartered with rebels for the return of white prisoners. Fortunately, Commander-in-Chief Sir Guy Carleton upheld British honour by insisting that the runaways were not, in fact, American property at the time of the Provincial Peace Agreement (1782) and that they must be allowed to evacuate with other Loyalists. The evacuees were carried to Bermuda, the West Indies, London, and other British territories, but the largest group, all told about 3,500, located in Nova Scotia in 1782-83. They confidently expected a just reward for their loyalty to the Crown. The central message of this very insightful work is that much "traditional" practice in Sierra Leone culture derives from Sierra Leone's violent integration into the Atlantic economy. Temne communities in northern Sierra Leone and in its capital, Freetown, provide the ethnographic focus of this book. Shaw analyzes divination, sorcery, and the ways that people react to rumors to show the extent to which memories of sudden violence, predation, and betrayal left Temne people to reshape popular culture in order to devise ways of getting by and managing these dangers. Unlike many scholars who mark the end of the slave trade in the nineteenth century as a watershed, Shaw shows how social practice suggests the continuity of uncertainty and vulnerability, first through the violent period of "legitimate trade" up to the 1896 establishment of the British Protectorate, and most recently in Sierra Leone's tragic rebel war.

The exchange will provide opportunities to experience world-class collections care and visitor services before they take over the running of the newly opened Sierra Leone National Railway Museum in Freetown. The new Sierra Leone National Railway Museum was established by Colonel Steve Davies MBE, Deputy Commander of the International Military Advisory Training Team in Sierra Leone, working in his spare time with a team of fifteen young unemployed Sierra Leoneans. Together they have transformed a shed of locomotives, abandoned since abolition of the State railway in 1974, into the countrys first railway museum (and second national museum). It includes a coach built for the State Visit of HM The Queen in 1961. Funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as part of Governments Africa Initiative, the training is arranged by the National Railway Museum, York in partnership with Hull City Museums. The visitors will experience working steam engines for the first time at the North Yorkshire Moors railway, where they will also learn more about conservation techniques. In Hull, the city twinned with Freetown, they will visit the birthplace of anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce. The trainee curators will also visit the Welsh Highland Railway, Ffestiniog Railway and the Llanfair and Welshpool Light Railway - which has a working example of a former Sierra Leone Railway steam locomotive.

Extractions: Surrounded by Guinea, Ivory Coast and Liberia on the West African coast, Sierra Leone is land of human diversity and mineral riches. As a political entity, the country is byproduct of the slave trade. Late in the 18th century, it was established as a colony for freed slaves who wanted to return safely to Africa. Sadly, the country subsequently became an example of the lasting chaos that the slave trade made of many African cultures. When the Portuguese began frequenting these West African shores in the 15th century, the territory was divided among small chieftaincies, many of them hostile to one another. Hence, the region yielded slaves readily, as one group was willing to sell members of another for profit. When British abolitionists colonized Sierra Leone, they hoped to resettle freed slaves from throughout the New World, and began doing so in Freetown in 1792. The powerful Temne people were understandably mistrustful and resisted forcefully. But in the first half of the 19th century, the colony attracted Africans from all over, and together they made the capital, Freetown, a vibrant economic center and the home of a new culture, Krio. But outside the city, old animosities and slaving continued right up to 1928, when the British finally ended the illicit trade. Shortly thereafter, diamond and gold mining emerged as centerpieces of the local economy. After independence in 1961, Sierra Leone swung from a conservative, market economy government to a far more left-leaning government during the `70s when the collapse of the oil market hit hard undermining, among other things, the country's recording industry. Things looked up briefly in the `80s, but in 1991, Liberia's militant rebel leader Charles Taylor brought that country's civil war to Sierra Leone, and the country has known a period of severe brutality and chaos ever since.
