On his first nine shots in the finals, Emmons' lowest score was a 9.3. He took careful aim, fired ... bull's eye. Instead of gold, Emmons, 23, of Browns Hill, N.J., was left trying to explain the rare mistake that left him in eighth place.

Extractions: FAULDS BAGS GOLD IN SHOOT-OFF Faulds shoots to gold for Britain Richard Faulds, of Britain, struck gold in a thrilling mens double trap shoot-out in Sydney today. The 23-year-old from Longparish in Hampshire beat Russell Mark, of Australia, to win Britains second gold of the Games. Faulds, who was lying fourth going into the final round, kept his nerve at the Sydney International Shooting Centre to become Britains first shooting gold medal-winner since Malcolm Cooper in 1988. It was Britains second shooting medal of the Games after Ian Peels silver in the mens trap. Faulds, who was fifth at the Atlanta Games four years ago, qualified for these Olympics by shooting a double trap world record score at a World Cup meeting, also held in Atlanta. The Surrey-born marksman, who competes for the East Yorkshire Gun Club, was two points behind Mark, who had shot an Olympic record total of 143 in the preliminary round. But in the six-man final, Faulds levelled the score with the Australian to set up the two-man gold medal shoot-out. Mark had the crowd behind him but Faulds hit three of the four clay targets to Marks two to clinch the Olympic gold. The bronze medal went to Fehaid Al Deehani, of Kuwait, who missed the gold medal shoot-out by one point.

Extractions: Australian Federal Parliament I rise tonight to talk about the wonderful and inspiring events of the past few weeks - and the equally inspiring events we will see when the Paralympics begin on September 18. The Olympic Games are more than just a sporting event. It is not about medal tallies, although that is a measure of the success of our elite sporting programs. The Olympics represent an opportunity for nations to showcase their cultural, political, economic, social and sporting achievements - and in almost every respect Australia showed world-class performances in these areas. There are particular features of the Olympics that stand out for special mention. Second, the New South Wales Government and SOCOG, who despite some pre-Games problems, delivered a near perfect Games. As with many other interstate spectators, I was very impressed with the transport system and slickness of operations which, given the problems of Atlanta, is testament to an epic planning and operational plan. Third, the officials and administrators who created a seamless environment in which world class athletic competition thrived.
Extractions: Rollerskating ballroom dancing (also known as dancesport) and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games . You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding as new events to future Olympic competitions There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics . They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events ? These are not sporting events, these are ways of killing people. The same goes for synchronized swimming , which you'll be seeing at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece . If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport. What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's Bodybuilding actually defined as a circus act or a freak show) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies, rather than sports.
Weird Winter Sports These aren t things your crazy uncle does they re olympic sports. Biathlon combines two sports cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. http://www.kidzworld.com/site/p1636.htm
Extractions: Skeleton is being held at the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1948. This was the world's first sliding sport. Riders slide on a small metal sled with two runners. The sport was given its name in 1892 when the new metal sled was introduced and everyone thought it looked like a skeleton. Riders do risk being nothing but a pile of bones by the end of a run since they ride head first at speeds nearing 90 miles per hour. In 2002, women will compete in this sport for the first time. Biathlon Biathlon combines two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Competitors are given points for how fast they ski and how accurate they can shoot. The sport originally started out as a survival strategy. People in Northern Europe would ski with guns to hunt for food and defend their countries. In the biathlon that takes place at the Winter Olympics, competitors just Snowball Fights shoot at targets - not animals or each other.
