Soon "gold fever" gripped the country. Prospectors and fortune seekersthe 49ersflooded the state. Ships provided the fastest way to the Mother Lode for prospectors from the East. In fact, while we often think of the Gold Rush pioneers crossing the western United States in covered wagons, the fact is that more people came to California by boat. They were the Argonautstravelers on the sea in search of adventure and riches. There were two ways to come to California by sea. The first was to go around the continent of South America. The other was to cross the isthmus of Panama from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific and board a vessel bound for California. Once in California, the gold fields beckoned. In fact, so many sailors jumped ship to run to the gold fields that crews for ships were scarce. A ghost fleet of abandoned and unmanned vessels anchored in San Francisco Bay. Some would say never, but a convenient measure is 1853 and 1854 when more people left California than came here. Skip navigation links In this theme Quick links Skip navigation links The Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Program aims to increase knowledge, use, appreciation and enjoyment of Australia's historic shipwreck heritage, while also ensuring the continued conservation, protection and preservation of these wrecks and relics. More than 6 500 wrecks lie just beyond Australia's surf-worn shores. Few of us will ever see them, but each has its own unique story and forms an important part of our heritage. Australia has a rich maritime history which can be traced back some 60 000 or more years to the arrival of Aboriginal people . They were followed later by the Macassans, who came to fish Australia's northern waters. In the 17th century, Europeans, including the Dutch, English and French, began arriving on the coast of the southern continent, having braved extraordinary distances in tiny sailing boats. The earliest recorded shipwreck is the English vessel Trial, which foundered in 1622 on the North West Coast of Western Australia. Other wrecks followed in the 17th and 18th centuries, which saw a number of Dutch East India Company ships foundering on the rocky coast of Western Australia.

Thousands of vessels from canoes to car ferries and steamers to modern ore boats have sailed these "inland seas" and unknown numbers still remain - settled on the lakes bottom in watery graves.
