Easier - Most people think of a shark as being a large, ferocious fish that has sharp teeth and feeds on meat. But in truth a shark can be one of over 370 different types and range in size from the whale shark, the largest of all fish that measure up to forty feet long, to the smallest shark, the spined pygmy shark that only grow to a length of about six inches. Harder - Sharks are found in all types of oceans including the arctic, but most are found in warm seas. Some prefer the spacious ocean depths, others are found in coastal waters, a few enter rivers and lakes that empty into the sea, and one species found in India and Pakistan lives only in freshwater rivers. Sharks are different from most other kinds of fish. They have a unique boneless skeleton that is composed of tough, elastic cartilage. Most sharks have a rounded tough-skinned, streamlined shaped body, somewhat like a torpedo. This helps them to swim. Unlike most fish, sharks do not have a swim bladder. Instead their oversized liver is filled with an oil that is lighter-weight than water. This also aids their swimming ability. Even so, most sharks must constantly swim or their body would sink.

Extractions: Welcome ! This site is dedicated to the fossil sharks and rays from the Cretaceous of the Netherlands. Objective is to give a brief overview of the most common species which can be found in the cretaceous sediments of the SE part of The Netherlands and the adjoining area in Belgium. There are a few good books and journals with pictures about this subject, but most of them are out of print, so this site could be usefull for collectors who don't have them. For this reason this site does NOT offer an exhaustive and complete list of all the species which can be found, just the most common species are listed. Recent publications mention the occurence of 52 species, but I restrict my overview to the 18 species I was able to collect during about a dozen visits to the ENCI-quarry near Maastricht. When collecting in the Limburg-area, you may have a good chance to find them too. All the teeth displayed on this site are in my collection and have been collected by myself during my visits to the ENCI-quarry. In some cases I included pictures of teeth that I have found at other localities than the ENCI-quarry. These species can be found in the ENCI-quarry too, but I have included them because it were exceptional good specimen or I had no proper specimen from the ENCI-quarry in my collection.

A shark has fins and a streamlined body that help it swim through water. It has gills, which take in oxygen directly out of the water. Because of its gills, sharks can stay underwater and not have to come to the surface to breathe. Sharks also have a tremendous number of sharp teeth, which make them fierce predators. In fact, if a shark accidentally breaks a tooth while chomping down on something, the tooth is almost immediately replaced by another tooth growing in the jaw. With all these special adaptations, sharks do really well in the ocean, but it would be very hard for a shark to survive in the Sahara Desert!

The majority of the 370 species of sharks are harmless, are less than 2 m long, and many species are less than 1 m long. The largest species, the whale and basking sharks, are plankton feeders, and no threat to humans. Sharks and their close relatives, the rays and the ghost sharks, belong to the class Chondrichthyes, the cartilaginous fishes. They are distinguished from the bony fishes by having only cartilage in the skeleton. A more easily seen feature is five to seven open gill slits on the side of the head in sharks (in rays the gill slits are underneath and the pectoral fins joined to the head), while bony fishes have their gill slits covered by an operculum or flap. The ghost sharks also have a cartilaginous skeleton, but their gill slits are covered by an operculum, or flap. One hundred and sixty five shark species, slightly less than half the world total, are found in Australian waters. Those families with the largest number of Australian species are the dogfish family Squalidae (40 species), the catshark family Scyliorhinidae (32 species) and the whaler family Carcharhinidae (30 species).
