Extractions: The new South Africa comes close to paradise as a travel destination. Breathtaking scenery, a near-perfect climate, superb food and wines, and exciting sporting activities compose an enticing holiday package. Plus this all comes together at an affordable price, often one-half the daily rate of a comparable European sojourn. What's more, there is a sophisticated, refined European ambiance in the hotels and restaurants amid a charming, warm African culture. True, service is not always perfection and certain areas and neighborhoods are off limits due to crime, but that's typical of many global cities. Lying at the southernmost tip of Africa, encompassing a vast area of over 1,200,000 square kilometers, South Africa is home to over 40 million people from vastly different cultural societies. To accommodate this diversity, the country now has 11 official languages the highest of any country in the world although English has been declared the main language of business. Today, with Nelson Mandela at the helm as president, there exists a genuine sense of pride and euphoric optimism for the country, among all the people, no matter what their politics or living standard. The interesting mix of people and languages, creeds and cultural elements drawn from both the developed and developing worlds, creates a fascinating ambiance and a delectable table.

It at least is the most beautiful place in Africa, however, the dark cloud of Apartheid meant many people were unwilling to visit the country until the breakdown of the system when Nelson Mandela came into power in 1994. Although it is now integrated, social and economic differences are still rife amongst the ethnic groups. The most beautiful aspect of South Africa is the ever - changing and breathtaking scenery. Or are you just dying to know how to get cool sunglasses like Peter Bechtel's? You sent us your questions and we did our best to get them answered for you and posted them below. Q: What effect does the Zimbabwe conflict concerning their wildlife poaching due to lawlessness have on Mozambique's poaching problem? Does the turmoil cross a porous border and spill into Mozambique? Also were the wild dog populations there decimated by the civil war and if not what is their status? Jim in Manassas, Va. Since the lawlessness in Zimbabwe is limited mainly to farm land, ranches and the Zambezi Valley, I do not think it has spilled over into Mozambique in a significant way if at all. As for the second part, wild dogs receive total legal protection in Mozambique. However, the outlook is not hopeful. Published reports indicate that there was a rapid decline in wild dog numbers after 1975, due to unregulated sport hunting, persecution by cattle farmers, and degradation of habitat. There are no records of disease. Wild dogs cross the border from Kruger National Park, South Africa in the south, and are also common in southern Tanzania to the north so, should conditions improve, Mozambique might be ideally placed for recolonization. The planned cross-border park envisaged joining Kruger to Mozambique will be of great benefit to wild dogs.

Extractions: (Extracts from SA at a Glance 2001/2 Beautiful and diverse, South Africa is home to over 40 million people comprising some 20 different ethnic groups. It is as large as Germany, France and Italy put together. At 35° south latitude, Cape Town is about the same distance from the equator as Sydney, Australia, or Los Angeles in the Northern Hemisphere. The countrys 2,945 kilometre coastline is washed by the cold Benguela current on the Atlantic and the warm Mozambique-Agulhas current on the east. The climate is moderate and the topography ranges from highveld grasslands to semi-desert to subtropical swamps, which are home to some of the worlds most diverse animal and plant kingdoms. South Africa is the only country with an entire floral kingdom - the Cape "fynbos" - within its borders. Most people live in the eastern regions where the higher rainfall, better soil and rich minerals offer more employment. Over a third of South Africans live in the four high population areas of Johannesburg / Pretoria / Vereeniging in Gauteng; Durban / Pinetown / Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal; the area around Cape Town; and the Port Elizabeth/Uitenhage area in the eastern Cape. South Africa boasts some of the earliest evidence of the emergence of the human species. For the past 100,000 years this area has been populated by San hunter-gatherers (Bushmen). Some 2,000 years ago the San turned to pastoralism, acquiring livestock from Bantu-speaking people migrating southwards. The Khoikhoi migrated down the west coast and were the first indigenous people to encounter Dutch settlers under Jan van Riebeeck, who established a base for the East India Company at the Cape in 1652 to provide ships with food, water and medical facilities.

Extractions: The Hlanganani Route is situated in the northern-most part of South Africa in the Limpopo Province (previously known as Northern Province) on the north-west border of one of Africa's finest parks, the Kruger National Park. It stretches from the Punda Maria gate along the R524 towards Louis Trichardt and then joins the R81 towards Giyani. Winding its way through the Malamulele district and the majority of the villages created when the Kruger National Park was established, the route is five hours drive from Gauteng and two hours drive from Polokwane (Pietersburg). Story behind the route name: Hlanganani is a Shangaan/Tsonga word meaning 'get together'. It was the name initially given by the communities living in the area by a committee formed with the help of the Park's Social Ecology Unit to address community safety against animals that breached the Park's fenced perimeter. When the decision to join the African Dream Project was made, this same committee became its Forum and it was agreed 'Hlanganani' was the obvious choice for the name of the Route.

They held wide-ranging discussions on a number of bilateral issues and common continental concerns. This is not Dlamini-Zuma's first visit to Egypt. She first visited Egypt last April to attend the Africa-Europe summit. A jet-setting minister, as befitting the representative of a country of South Africa's international standing, Dlamini-Zuma nevertheless has her finger firmly on the pulse of her country's and the African continent's most pressing social challenges. Dlamini-Zuma is a paediatrician who terminated a flourishing medical career to devote her life entirely to the anti-apartheid struggle. She headed the African National Congress health department in Lusaka, Zambia in the late 1980s, after working at a number of hospitals in England, South Africa and Swaziland. A former South African minister of health, Dlamini-Zuma is no stranger to the world of international diplomacy, but at heart she is still active in the medical sphere. She is a member of the steering committee of the National AIDS Coordinating Committee of South Africa and has a special interest in children suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Many are linked to similar ethnic groups living in neighboring countries. The north-central provinces of Zambezia and Nampula are the most populous, with about 45% of the population. The estimated 4 million Makua are the dominant group in the northern part of the countrythe Sena and Ndau are prominent in the Zambezi valley, and the Tsonga and Shangaan dominate in southern Mozambique. Despite the influence of Islamic coastal traders and European colonizers, the people of Mozambique have largely retained an indigenous culture based on small-scale agriculture. Mozambique's most highly developed art forms have been wood sculpture, for which the Makonde in northern Mozambique are particularly renowned, and dance. The middle and upper classes continue to be heavily influenced by the Portuguese colonial and linguistic heritage. During the colonial era, Christian missionaries were active in Mozambique, and many foreign clergy remain in the country. According to the national census, about 20%-30% of the population is Christian, 15%-20% is Muslim, and the remainder adheres to traditional beliefs.
