Extractions: Male Circumcision In Africa (Part 2) Return to Part 1 NAMIBIA: TRADITIONAL METHODS OF CIRCUMCISION ... WINDHOEK - Journalists jostled for positions at the house of the Herero paramount chief Kuaima Riruako in Windhoek recently to witness the public circumcision of an 11-year-old Herero boy. While most indigenous peoples in Namibia have done away with the traditional circumcision of young boys, the Herero have vowed to stick to the practice which is deeply rooted in their tradition. Debate on the subject was rekindled after a Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) news program earlier this month, which showed a young boy being circumcised with a blunt knife. The program unleashed criticism from the National Society for Human Rights which described the procedure as being "tantamount to torture." The society's senior spokesperson, Zen Mnakapa said: "The method used constitutes both physical and psychological torture and is in definite conflict with the rights of children." In a letter published in The Namibian, the deputy minister of Fisheries, Dr. Abraham Iyambo, says the recent pictures carried by NBC television on circumcision can only be branded as disturbing, nauseating, painful, cruel and stupefying. "Those crying children could ask whether the painful procedure was not in contravention of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child," says Dr. Iyambo. He said only good and painless cultural practices should be upheld and defended; painful, bad, obsolete and deforming cultures should be condemned, abandoned or reformed.

Extractions: The origin of the indigenous livestock of South Africa According to the archeologists, South Africa was occupied solely by San hunter-gatherers before the time of Christ. These people survived by hunting game species rather than keeping domesticated livestock. The origin of the domesticated animals is thought to in the Middle East about 9 000 years ago. Sheep and goats were probably the first animals to be domesticated followed by cattle and pigs and, lastly, horses. There is evidence of further centres of domestication in the Indus valley and perhaps in the north of Africa in the Sahara region which had a considerably wetter climate at that time. Although most of the evidence of early domesticated breeds has been found by archeologists, there are early records of domesticated livestock in Egyptian paintings and carvings in temples. There is also mention of domesticated sheep in Genesis. Later rock paintings are to be found in many regions of Africa - a particularly rich inheritance can be seen in South Africa. A goat depicted on an Egyptian tomb South African rock painting of cattle A last phase of introduction began in the 16th to 17th century when European settlers brought their farm animals into the country. Many of these breeds, which included breeds of horses, donkeys and pigs, have adapted to their new environment.

Extractions: In many African countries, tourism is a major source of jobs and foreign currency. Tourism gives African governments an incentive to protect endangered species and historic monuments, and it can provide foreign visitors with a deeper appreciation of Africa's history and cultures than they could ever obtain from movies and textbooks. Still, how much Africa's economies, ecosystems, and citizens really benefit from tourism remains open to debate. Tourism is typically a low-wage and often highly seasonal industry, and the popularity of a particular region or site can shift according to the promotional campaigns of foreign travel agencies. In addition, much of the revenue generated by tourism does not remain in the host country. The amount that goes to foreign airlines, hotel chains, and tour operators, known as "leakage," is very high in countries where many visitors come as part of organized package tours. For example, in Kenya, leakage has been estimated to consume about 70 percent of tourism revenue; in the Gambia, the figure is 60 percent. Some of the activities associated with tourism in Africa date back centuries. As far back as the Roman occupation of Egypt beginning around 30 b.c.e., Romans explored the ruins of Thebes and tombs in the Valley of the Kings. For centuries, Arab, Asian, and later European explorers trekked across portions of the continent, often keeping records of the sites and peoples they encountered.
