Extractions: Search Engine Watch Subject Directories Subject directories include human-selected Internet resources and are arranged and classified in hierarchical topics. Most search engines and portals have a subject directory component or partner. Hierarchical subject classification schemes are the defining characteristic of most subject directories. You 'drill down' to the level of entries which best meets your needs. Directories of web sites typically have a large amount of human effort involved in the selection, evaluation and indexing of web pages and therefore are considerably smaller than the machine built indexes. Most often these databases are built of URLs submitted by individuals to the directory but humans or web spiders may selectively search out new sites to be included.

When you type in a query the search engine will produce a list of Web pages that best match the search words you have used. Search engines differ both in the way that they gather and store information, and in the algorithm they use to match and rank the results. They also vary in the level of sophistication that they permit when you are constructing a search: some allow only relatively simple searches while others offer full Boolean searching and more.

In CSE, a local search engine located in each Web server makes an index of local pages. And, a meta search server integrates these local search engines in order to realize a global search engine. In such a way, the communication delay occurs at retrieval time. So, it is thought to be difficult to search fast. However, we have developed several speedup techniques in order to realize real time retrieval. In addition, the meta server is single point of failure in CSE. So, we propose redundancy of meta search servers in order to increase availability of CSE. In this paper, we describe scalability and reliability of CSE and their evaluations. Narayana Murthy, Department of CIS, University of Hyderabad,Hyderabad 500 046, India knmcs@uohyd.ernet.in According to the results of a report published in the Institute of science the world wide web is estimated to contain 320 million pages as of 1998. Another startling fact is the web continues to grow exponentially doubling every few months. To add to the problem the web is highly unstructured and as a result locating information on the web is getting more difficult. Search services appeared on the scene in 1994 when Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com) was conceived as the first portal site. In the year 1995 there were about 12 search services. Today there are more than 2000 search services available on the web. The necessity of search services are evident when today all of the popular sites on the web include a search service or provide access to one. Meta search services have been described as the next level up the information food chain. A Meta search engine provides a common interface to query multiple search services at the same time. Meta search services do not maintain an index or a spider of their own but instead rely on the underlying search services.
