Seal Bay Conservation Park - Australian Sea-Lion The Australian sealion (Neophoca cineria) is one of the rarest seal species in the world, it has an unusual 17.6 month gestation period. http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/sealbay/sealion.html
Extractions: Australian Sea-lion Neophoca cinerea Along with fur-seals, sea-lions belong to the eared seal family, or Otariidae. They differ from true seals, or Phocidae, by having external ears, propelling themselves through the water with their front flippers and are more agile on land (as they are capable of "walking" on all four flippers). The world population of the Australian Sea-lion is about 12,000. Of these 8,500 occur in South Australia and 3,500 in Western Australia. They are one of the rarest seal species in the world. They occur from The Pages (two small islands east of Kangaroo Island), along the southern coast of South Australia and around the Western Australian coast to the Houtmans Abrolhos Islands near Geraldton. Seal Bay Conservation Park supports the third largest colony of Australian Sea-lions with a population of approximately 700 (5% of the world total).

Extractions: Welcome to "possibly" the most complete archive site on the internet. This site is unofficial and just one of a number of supporter's sites that are available to peruse. It is not in any way intended to be anything other than a source of information. I do not claim to have the best or most complete Lions site on the net, far from it. As visitors may have noticed, I have had very little chance to apply any updates to this site since last Summer. For this I can only apologise. I'm a one-man band that has been caught up in a mire of other things. However, that rarity of rarities is underway - a revamp and updates! I will be doing my best to keep up with as many news items as I can, and to increase the articles in the archive. I will get as complete a history of all things Lions as I can, may not be complete until South Africa 2009, but it will get there. As I have not had a look at this stuff in close to a year, there may some glitches with the changeover, bear with me - it is a work in progress over the next few weeks. I will be doing my utmost to bring as much possible information regarding the Lions in to one location. There is a fairly extensive history of the Lions already on the site, not complete by any means, but far more complete than some sites have claimed. I hope to be able to add more reports, accounts and anecdotes from previous tours over the next year - I have a lot of information to go through in the next few months. We all know about 1997 and 2001, but I am sure there are others out there like myself who would enjoy reading articles from earlier tours.

Extractions: @import url("../stylesheets/explore_adv.css"); Back to Explore Back to Fact Sheets Neophoca cinerea The Australian Sea Lion, Neophoca cinerea is a sexually dimorphic species with the adult males up to twice the weight and length of the female. Both sexes have stocky bodies, a large head and short narrow flippers. Apart from size, the sexes are easily identified by coat colour. The male is dark brown with mane-like yellow areas on the neck and top of the head. The females are silver grey to fawn on the back and creamy coloured underneath. Pups are born with a chocolate brown fur, which is lost after the first moulting phase. This species is endemic to Australian waters and breeds on at least 50 islands off the coast of Western Australia and South Australia. They prefer sandy beaches, usually in isolated bays and sheltered areas. One such site on Kangaroo Island off South Australia has become a popular tourist attraction. Australian Sea Lion numbers are relatively small compared to other seals in the area and like most it suffered heavily during the 19th century sealing period with many colonies being wiped out. It is protected by Australian State and Federal government legislation and listed as rare by the IUCN.
