After the death of Alexander III. The hopes of the people of Scotland rested with the maid of Norway. Her untimely death in 1290 left the country at the mercy of the English King. From that date until the crown was awarded to John Balliol, Edward prosecuted remorselessly his schemes against the independence of Scotland. The Scottish King, as a vassal, paid homage to Edward and, in return, suffered many humiliations at the hands of his overlords. Scottish nobles and gentry - many from our Borderland - were compelled to swear allegiance to the "proud usurper." However, this reign of tyranny and oppression was destined to be overthrown by one of humble birth. From the West of Scotland came William Wallace , inspired with the fervid patriotism to devote his life to winning back the independence of his country.

Contact Us History The English-Speaking Union has been active in Scotland for over seventy years. The Edinburgh Branch of the ESU was formally inaugurated on 15th May 1930, but the ESU had been established in the city for several years before that. ESU Scotland was recognised as a distinct national organisation in 1952, and in 1961, it purchased its current headquarters, at 23 Atholl Crescent. These were purchased with the help of a bequest from William Thyne - a bequest which led to the establishment of the Thyne Scholarship. Over the last forty years, ESU Scotland has supported a broad range of programmes which have been designed to promote the effective use of spoken English, and to further international understanding. Its current programmes include scholarships, a schools debating competition, English as a Foreign Language classes and the annual Scottish American Memorial Day Service.

Extractions: There is a sentiment, which announces to all: "We are kin. We are a family." And like any family, we disagree at times on some things, but come together in a crisis. Not much more needs to be said about the Highland clans ... or is there? Mr. E. William Robertson [1862] noted that the feeling of kindred was extremely strong amongst all early Celtic and Teutonic nations, and it was upon this principle that the lands were divided by the tribes. Mr. William Forbes Skene [1837] seems to agree, when he states that "the Highland Clans are not of a different foreign origin, but that they were a part of the original nation, who have inhabited the mountains of Scotland as far back as the memory of man, or the records of history can reach; that they were divided into several great tribes possessing their hereditary chiefs". Not much is known up to and including the first permanent residents of the land of Ross and Moray. We might surmise that they were seafarers, who did some hunting and fishing and farming around their coastal communities. The evidence of these Neolithic farmers from several thousand years ago exists in the "great communal tombs - the chambered cairns - which served both as places of burial and worship" in an area just west of Tain at Ardvannie and Leachonich near Edderton. The huge upright slabs were arranged in a circle to form an inner chamber into which a long passage led from one side. Over this was raised a great mound of stones and pebbles, bounded by a border of massive boulders at the edge. Despite evidence of plundering by later settlers, the cairn at Ardvannie is over seventy feet across. Other ruins in association with human remains at Culbokie on the Black Isle consist of two concentric stone walls surrounded by a ditch near the small loch.
