    Extractions: New Zealand has about 120 species of orchids, and while some are epiphytes (live on trees or logs) most are ground dwelling. Our orchids are not spectacular in the large brightly coloured tropical sense, but they are just as interesting and beautiful. Orchids are found all over New Zealand,in forests , grassland, swamps, clay banks and alpine areas but as the flowers are small, often white or green, they are easily missed. The really special thing about our orchids is that they are largely self pollinated. Another unusual feature is that they grow under introduced trees, for example under Pinus nigra near Taupo, there are a large number of orchid species growing - so many that a special reserve has been created.

Then research workers had access to modern equipment and methods, which were not available six decades earlier. They tended to study a small field and to specialize in it. But Raman never limited his activities and interests to a narrow field. In 1969, the daughter of Nagendranath (who had been a research student under him thirty years earlier) was married; Raman and his wife attended thereception. Raman drew Nagendranath aside and explained his new problem; he was trying to find a theory of earthquakes taking into account the actual shape of the earth and the wave-like nature of the quakes. Raman was not a person to be satisfied with his past achievements. He was always seeking new and vaster fields of study.
