Extractions: Clinical psychologists make up the largest proportion of psychologists and work primarily in hospitals, clinics, and counseling centers. They help patients with mental illness or injuries to rehabilitate and adjust to life. Often clinical psychologists will help patients with neurological conditions, spinal cord injuries, chronic illness, strokes, and arthritis. Also, they help people coping with personal crises, such as the death of a close family member. Clinical psychologists perform a variety of tests, interviews, and evaluations with patients who have different needs. Behavior modification and group psychotherapy programs are two specific examples. These psychologists usually work in collaboration with specialists in developing treatment programs that are compatible with a patients level of understanding. Others work in institutions such as medical schools or colleges. They teach students good practice in behavior medicine and health. Still others are involved in community serviced health programs.

Cognition And Xenodochy Home Page The philosophy of simple and mobile life including a synthesis of epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, general semantics, psychology, and motivation, with an explanation of the biological basis of prejudice. http://www.xenodochy.org
Extractions: cognition and xenodochy Cognition The action or faculty of knowing taken in its widest sense, including sensation, perception, conception, etc., as distinguished from feeling and volition. Xenodochy Hospitality to strangers, particularly the reception of foreigners; living together with other species on friendly terms; recognizing and supporting civil rights for aliens. Sentient Sovereignty A significant detriment to the principles offered here is prejudice. If we are to be really prepared to support these principles, we must have a means to overcome prejudice. That means is knowledge of the foundations of prejudice and how to use that knowledge to overcome it. In keeping with the principle of sentient sovereignty, this is personal knowledge - knowledge one can use oneself - not knowledge one can control others with. A prerequisite for understanding these intra-organismic and inter-organismic issues is understanding the structural elements of mobile organisms in their environments - the philosophy of mobile life . The perspective for these views is informed by the study of general semantics , which commands us to consider the organism in its environment as a whole , and the philosophy of simple life (working drafts).

Coming Out Can Reduce Sexual Prejudice A national survey study finds that heterosexuals who personally know a gay man or lesbian have more favorable attitudes toward gay people in general than do heterosexuals without such contact. http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/comeout1.html
Extractions: Coming Out Can Reduce Sexual Prejudice Heterosexuals With Personal Contact Have More Positive Feelings toward Lesbians and Gay Men Research by a UC Davis social psychologist indicates that lesbians and gay men who come out of the closet to their heterosexual friends and family members help to create more positive attitudes toward homosexuality. "Heterosexuals with a gay friend or relative have significantly more favorable attitudes toward lesbians and gay men as a group," said Dr. Gregory Herek, a professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis and principal investigator for the national opinion survey, published in the April, 1996, issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin With co-author Prof. John Capitanio, Herek reported that simply having personal contact with a lesbian or gay man does not necessarily affect heterosexuals' feelings about gays and lesbians. Rather, heterosexuals tend to hold favorable attitudes if they know two or more gay people, if those people are close friends or immediate family members, and if there has been open discussion about the friend or relative's sexual orientation. The Journal of Sex Research Open Discussion Is Important "Direct disclosure of one's homosexuality talking about it openly appears to play an important role in changing attitudes," said Herek. By directly discussing her or his sexual orientation, Herek suggested, a lesbian or gay man can help a heterosexual loved one to reach a better understanding of homosexuality and what it means to be gay. She or he can answer questions and break down stereotypes.
